Distance Runners to Compete in Boston

1/28/2010 11:43:18 PM | Track and Field

BOSTON, Mass. – The Syracuse track and field teams' distance squads will travel to Boston to take part in the Terrier Invitational, hosted by Boston University on Saturday, Jan. 30. The meet will take place at Boston's Track and Tennis Center and is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m.

The men's team will be sending 16 distance runners to represent Syracuse at the competition. One of the men in orange will be sophomore Steve Murdock, who won the crown in the 3,000-meter run at the Syracuse Welcome Back competition on Jan. 16. Fellow sophomore and teammate Corey Robinson, who nabbed a top three finish in the one mile at the same meet earlier this month, will be joining Murdock in Boston.

Several members of the SU nationally ranked No. 11 men's cross country team will be returning to action this weekend at the Terrier Invitational, including sophomore Tito Medrano. Medrano became Syracuse's 15th All-American in school history, and first in nearly three decades, after his performance at the NCAA Cross Country Championship, where he finished 39th overall. Sophomores Pat Dupont, Griff Graves, seniors Brad Miller, and Dan Busby will all be running as well. Dupont finished first on the team and fifth overall (31:09) at the NCAA Cross Country Northeast Regional to capture the team's first regional championship in program history. He also powered the men at the BIG EAST Championship, finishing fourth overall (24:51) to help win the team's first conference title in school history. Graves and Miller were both named to the 2009 Northeast All-Region Team.

On the women's side, 15 runners will be competing for the Orange. Senior Maegan Krifchin looks to lead her team with a repeat of her latest performance, as she grabbed one of only four first place titles for Syracuse at the Cornell Upstate Challenge on Jan. 23. Graduate student Beth Long and senior Stefanie Slekis, both of whom will be competing in Boston, turned in second place finishes for the Orange at the Upstate Challenge in the 800-meter and the one mile, respectively. Other entries for SU include freshman Roseda Lo, who finished fourth overall in the 800-meter run at the Syracuse Welcome Back, as well as junior Tricia Wardell, who turned in a 16th place finish in the 3,000-meter run.

The 2009 USTFCCCA Northeast Region Athlete of the Year, junior Katie Hursey, will also be representing the Orange women on Saturday. Hursey became SU's first individual women's champion at the Northeast Regional on November 14, while also posting the team's best time in four out of five races this season, including her impressive 80th place finish (21:10.5) at the NCAA Championship. In Boston, Hursey will be joined by several other members of the No. 12 nationally ranked 2009 women's cross country program, including Northeast All-Region Team members Catherine DeSarle, Lauren Penney, and Natalie Busby.
