ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell track and field teams had impressive performances across the board in their first scored meet of the season, winning the men's and women's team titles at the Cornell Upstate Challenge on Saturday at Barton Hall. Competing against Buffalo, Colgate, Cortland, Ithaca College and Syracuse, the Big Red combined for 20 events wins and had 12 IC4A qualifiers and 4 ECAC qualifiers.
The women had a number of very strong showings as they tallied 279 team points, ahead of Buffalo (141), Syracuse (74), Colgate (29), Ithaca College (27) and Cortland (6). Sophomore
Melissa Hewitt was a double-winner, claiming the 60 in an ECAC-qualifying 7.58 and easily taking the 200 in a time of 25.15. Senior co-captain
Jessica Weyman ran a very good 400, winning in an ECAC-qualifying 56.61 and then came back to place second in the 200 in 25.62. Fellow senior co-captain
Megan Williams won the 500 in 1:15.77, her second straight week dipping under the ECAC standard; freshman
Libby O'Brien was second in a personal best 1:16.48. Junior Kim Standridge won the mile in 5:03.58, sophomore
Molly Glantz won the 800 in 2:15.08 and freshman
Kelsey Karys cruised to victory in the 3000 in 10:03.87. Other top three individual showings on the track came from senior Kate Backel (third in the 200 and second in the 400 at 25.81 and 57.09), sophomore
Kelsey Reimnitz (third, 58.46) in the 400, freshman
Maria Catanzarite in the 800 (third, 2:19.76), junior
Anna Scull in the 1000 (2nd, 2:57.64), freshman
Cara Costich in the 3000 (2nd, 10:23.80), and junior
Kristin Sellers (2nd, 18:17.23) and freshman
Kate Rosettie(3rd, 18:18.52) in the 5000.
Junior Kim Lienhoop led the way in the field, winning the long jump at 18-2 1/4 while sophomore
Kristin Brandt was second at 17-11 1/2. Brandt came back to place second in the triple ump at 37-10 3/4, while Lienhoop was third at 37-4 1/2. Freshman
Victoria Imbesi was third in the shot put in a personal best 43-11 3/4 and junior Cassie Schweighofer was third in the weight throw at 49-6 1/4. Sophomore Sam Brady continued to vault well, clearing 11-3 3/4 to get second; freshman
Lindsey Patterson also cleared 11-3 3/4 to get fourth.
