Sophomore Brenton Baker Ties Class State Record At Houghton

Brenton Baker (Sweet Home) is no stranger to competition. He's been competing for years at the USATF level, as well as on the Football field as a Wide-receiver. But in his freshman year, he caught the track bug after making his debut last spring. One year later, and a new event, he's finding his way over the bar.

Baker cleared 6-8 in the High Jump on Friday night, a full foot over the next best competitor. It's his second time competing in the event this winter, not a bad rise from his 6-5 clearance in his Invitational debut. The improvement moves him from State-Level competitor, to State Meet favorite, as he now ranks as NY#1, and as the highest jumped since 2021.

It also ties his name to history. Only a sophomore, he joins only three other sophomores to clear that height. The mark also ties him for the Sophomore State Record in the event, with plenty of time left in the Season to improve. The current Section 6 record also stands at 6-11.25 the next milestone to master.

Catch his jump below, and keep your eyes out in Buffalo for the next attempt.
