Outlook: The Bears' chances for a repeat States title and a sweep of the team and individual titles look pretty solid. Adam Furman is the considerable favorite for the win this year, and Craig Costa and Van Furman are back as States medalists and Vincent Mingo was in the top 25. If TV's schedule is anything like last year's early season cooker, we should know soon how well set they are at the back of the lineup as help will be needed there to replace departed senior Caleb Edwards.

Arkport-Canaseraga (Wolves)

States Teams:   2019 (D-3rd), 2021 (D-2nd)
States Individuals (Top 10 finishers):  Brian Gowiski (2007, D-7th), Casey Wellington (2009, D-10th), Jeremiah Ford (2019, D-7th), Pierce Young (2021, D-3rd)

Outlook: The Wolves will be strong contenders again for the States title with 3rd place finisher Pierce Young and top-25 guys Salim and Ibrahim Ford and Brayden Brewster. The big question after losing #5 guy Cameron Williams to graduation is whether that spot can be filled from a pretty thin roster. If not, holding off a deeper Oakfield-Alabama team in the S5-D contest will be difficult since last year there were 151 guys and 116 team-runner finishers in that race.

Oakfield-Alabama (Hornets)

States Teams:   1983 (C-9th), 1991 (C-10th), 2004 (D-3rd), 2005 (D-3rd), 2006 (D-4th), 2018 (D-4th)
States Individuals (Top 10 finishers):  Mike Kinsley (1983, C-6th), Eugene Peterson (2002, D-10th) (2003, D-9th), Kevin Grazioplene (2008, D-8th), Derek McIntire (2019, D-8th), Connor Domoy (2021, D-7th)

Outlook: The Hornets' entire varsity is back this year headed by States 7th-place finisher Connor Domoy, but the gap between them and S5-D champ Arkport was 34 points. Some upward movement is needed for Oakfield-Alabama's top 5 this year, and since two of guys were freshmen in 2021, that seems very likely.

Port Jefferson (Royals)

States Teams:   1952 (B-1st), 1953 (B-1st), 1958 (A-2nd), 1964 (A-2nd), 1965 (A-2nd), 1974 (C-1st), 1975 (B-2nd), 1976 (B-1st), 1977 (B-2nd), 1978 (B-5th), 1979 (B-4th), 1980 (B-7th), 1982 (B-4th),1983 (B-4th), 2000 (D-8th), 2001 (D-4th), 2002 (D-7th), 2003 (D-10th), 2004 (D-7th), 2005 (D-5th), 2006 (C-9th), 2007 (C-7th), 2009 (D-5th), 2010 (C-6th), 2011 (C-5th), 2013 (D-5th), 2017 (C-9th), 2018 (C-4th), 2019 (C-3rd), 2021 (D-7th)

Outlook: The Royals have everyone except #2 guy Joyner Gray back from last year, and they have enough depth to likely win a 5th straight S11-D title but also move well up from their 7th place finish at States last year.

Frewsburg (Bears)

States Teams:   1998 (C-4th), 2000 (D-4th), 2001 (D-10th)
States Individuals (Top 10 finishers):  Cameron Smith (1998, C-6th), Trevor Cable (1999, D-10th) (2000, D-1st)

Outlook: The Bears have not made a visit to States in more than two decades, but this could be their best opportunity to go there with last year's largely intact varsity back. Perennial S6-D champ Maple Grove lost two of their top 4 four, but Frewsburg will need to recruit a few more younger runners because the squad is very thin.

Tully (Black Knights)

States Teams:   2000 (D-1st), 2002 (D-2nd), 2003 (D-1st), 2006 (C-1st), 2007 (C-2nd)
States Individuals (Top 10 finishers):  Sean Reinhardt (2000, D-10th), Lopez Lomong (2001, D-3rd) (2002, C-1st) (2003, D-1st), Dominic Luka (2002, C-2nd) (2003, D-2nd), Mike Heymann (2006, C-5th), Scott VanderMolen (2006, C-5th), Chris Burke (2007, C-3rd)

Outlook: It's been 15 years since the Black Knights have been to States as they have usually been overwhelmed by the Beaver River legions. The Beavers lost two of their top 3 while Tully lost States finalist Connor Jackson, and there may be just enough of an opening for seniors Ian Rauber and Ryan Mize to lead a Black Knights' upset of the team they lost to by 17 points in last year's S3-D race.

Outlook: Last year Colton Kempney claimed the Beavers' fifth States individual title after finishing 2nd in both 2018 and 2019 as a freshman and sophomore, but BR's last States team champ was way back in 2019, which seems like an eon ago for a team that has scored a record 18 crowns. After the departure of Kempney and 28th-place States finisher Brayden Campeau, it will be up to junior 11th-place States medalist Connor Zehr and his freshman brother Mason to be leading the Beaver campaign for a fifth straight sectional title and a 19th state championship, a march that began back in the 1980s when another pair of Zehr brothers were helping to lead the charge.
