The Armory Foundation and USA Track and Field promised to inject energy into the 102nd Millrose Games and it’ll begin with the journey to Madison Square Garden. There will be some additions to the Millrose Trials at the New Balance Track and Field Center Jan. 13, starting with a Wanamaker Mile Qualifier.
For the first time the Millrose Trials will offer a men’s mile qualifier for the Millrose Games most featured event for the winner of qualifying race, but only if the winner breaks four minutes. The invitational boys and girls high school mile races will also have a qualifier to earn a spot on the line. The Games will take the winner boys and girls race if they race a time standard. The boys are required to run under-4:20 and the girls under-5:00.
The weight throw, which has been contested at the Trials before, will now serve as a qualifier into the Millrose Games, which has added a boys and girls weight throw to the schedule. The Millrose weight throw competitions will be at the New Balance Track and Field Center the morning of the Games, Jan. 29, at 11 a.m.
The Millrose Games have also reformed or added four high school relays to the schedule. The top two teams from the Suffolk County and Nassau County 4x400 will earn a bid to Millrose along with the next two fastest times from two races combined, to re-introduce a Long Island Suburban race.
The top team from the Rockland/Orange, the top two from Westchester/Putnam/Dutchess race and one from the New Jersey Suburban 4x400, as well as two at-large teams will combine for one Suburban High School 4x400 at the Millrose Games.
This year, the Millrose Games will also introduce a girls 4x800 relay. The Border Clash boys 4x800, which morphed into a high school invitational boys 4x800, will become an invitational 4x800 focused on metro-area teams. Plus, the AAIS league will both have qualifying races to Millrose.
Even the race schedule has been reformatted to add excitement to the relay meet. The competition starts with youth 4x200 relays and builds into the featured mile qualifiers, starting with the girls mile qualifier at 6:40 p.m., with the Wanamaker Mile trial at 7:10 p.m. and the boys qualifier at 7:40 p.m.
