Nicholas Lourenco Moves To NY #2 With 17-Foot Clearance

The Summer Season is only beginning, and one New York State Champ is already improving. Nicholas Lourenco (Saint Anthony's) is coming off a State Meet Record set at the Cicero North Syracuse facility, and he has moved the bar up even higher. Vaulting in New Jersey over the weekend, Lourenco cleared 17-0 at the Vault Factory Independence Day Meet. Lourenco was the highest high schooler of the meet, and second overall, only behind a single Collegiate Sophomore who went on to 17-6. New Balance National Champ Veronica Vacca won the Girls Competition well over 13-ft.

The mark is now NY #2 All-Time, behind only that of the State Record, set by Louis Martinez (Wallkill) just last year. Martinez cleared 17-1 at the 2021 Flying Circus Summer Festival competition, to become New York's top vaulter Indoors or Out. Lourenco is set to compete at the 2022 Edition of the Flying Circus Summer Festival, held this weekend at the Warwick Valley Barn. Lourenco is also only the third New Yorker over 17-feet, joining Martinez and Indoor State Record Holder Jordan Yamoah (Arlington).

The Catholic National Record for the Pole Vault is set at 17-6, held by Michael Woepse of Mater Dei, CA, set in 2010.
