Orange Scholar-Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Seniors Melissa Romero (Wilmington, Del.) and Ryan Corcoran (Harleysville, Pa.) have been named Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week of December 7, 2009.

Romero is a jumper on the Syracuse track and field team. The Orange opened the 2009-10 indoor season at the Cornell Relays on December 5, where Romero turned in the day's top performance. She earned the team's only first place finish in the high jump with a leap of 1.65m.

Romero, a newspaper journalism major in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, will resume competition after the holidays, when the Orange hosts the annual Syracuse Welcome Back on Saturday, January 16.

Corcoran is a swimmer on the SU swimming and diving team. He last competed at the 2009 AT&T Short Course National Championships in Seattle, where he finished 73rd in the 50 Free Prelims in 21.35.

Corcoran is a computer engineering major in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science. He will join the rest of the swim team when they compete against Providence and Maine in Providence, R.I. on Friday, January 15 and Saturday, January 16.
