PSAL Cities: Brooklyn Tech and Health Professions claim City Crowns

 

 

Brooklyn Tech edged out Curtis by one point in the boys race at the PSAL Championships at Van Cortlandt Park Saturday, 80-81, for its first PSAL title in eight years. Two years ago Brooklyn Tech was buried in seventh place at the City Championships. Last year the team finished third but with 146 points.

Jason Stapleton won the individual title Saturday for Curtis, finishing in 16:43.47. But Michael Coogan (third, 17:00.1) and Zakariah Malik (eighth, 17:23.64) finished ahead of Curtis’ No. 2 runner to keep the Engineers in contention. The teams were tied at 54 after they both finished their first fourth scorers.

Then Tech’s Brandon Seabrook finished exactly one second ahead of Miguel Orea of Curtis to give Tech the narrow victory. Seabrook was 26th in 18:01.94 and Orea 27th in 18:02.94.

In the girls race, Health Professions squeaked ahead of Curtis as well, winning 108-112. Heath Professions won its first city championship in school history, carried by strong performances up front. Terese Thompson finished second in 20:20.59 with teammate Miy Mahran fourth in 20:40.39. Curtis closed the gap with their fourth and fifth runners but couldn’t recover. Port Richmond finished third with 125 points.

Katherine Currier of Laguardia won the individual title in 20:09.34.

Brooklyn Tech, Curtis, MSIT and Bronx High School of Science advanced to the State Federation Championships at Bowdoin Park Saturday. Health Professions, Curtis, Port Richmond and Tottenville advanced for the girls.
