BOSTON, Mass. – The nationally ranked Syracuse cross country teams will compete in the NCAA Northeast Regional on Saturday, Nov. 14 hosted by Boston University. The meet will be held at the university's home course, which is situated in Boston's Franklin Park. With over 500 acres, the park is the largest of its kind in the city. The men's 10k race is set to begin at 2:30 p.m., with the women's 6k race to follow at 3:30 p.m.
Both teams are coming off a one-week rest after competing in the BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 31. The No. 11 Orange men claimed the BIG EAST title for the first time in program history, improving on a fifth place finish last season. Sophomore Pat Dupont led the charge for the squad, placing fourth overall with a time of 24:51. In addition to Dupont, SU's six other top finishers from the conference championship team will be competing in the NCAA Regional. Senior Jeff Scull, sophomore Tito Medrano, senior Dan Busby, senior Brad Miller, and sophomores Forrest Misenti and Steve Murdock will round out the men's lineup.
On the women's side, junior Katie Hursey will look to lead the No. 10 Orange yet again, after clocking the team's best time in three out of the four races she has competed in this season. Most recently, Hursey's eighth place finish at the BIG EAST Championship propelled Syracuse to take a program-best third place. The women's squad headed to the NCAA Regional will consist of Hursey, the team's next five highest finishers from the conference championship, and sophomore Lauren Penney, who was an All-Northeast selection as a freshman.
The top two men's teams from the Northeast Region, as well as the top two women's teams, will automatically advance to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind. Additionally, 13 at-large teams will also qualify for the National Championships.
The top four individual finishers at the Regional that are not on a qualifying team will also advance, as will two additional at-large individuals.
