Jeff Scull
Jeff Scull has two races behind him so far this season as he and the rest of the No. 14 men's team travel to the BIG EAST Championship on Saturday

Up to Speed: Jeff Scull

10/28/2009 3:01:58 PM | Cross Country

In 2009, senior Jeff Scull has led the No. 14 Syracuse men's cross country team to a No. 11 U.S.T.F.C.C.C.A. national ranking – the team's highest position in history. The Ontario native was an All-BIG EAST and All-Northeast Region selection in 2007. He also received an automatic invitation to the 2007 Division-I NCAA Championship. After receiving a medical redshirt for the 2008 season, he has helped the Orange earn a first and second place finish at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational and the Panorama Invitational, respectively. At the Wisconsin meet, Scull finished 15th with a time of 24:22. He followed that performance with a seventh place finish at the Panorama race, hosted by the University of Virginia.

On why he chose SU:
“Well I took a year off from university and I wasn't running very good. I didn't have a lot of other options at the time. Coach Fox called me and I came down and visited. I really liked it because it's only about three hours away from home. I really liked what Coach was selling about building a big program and it got me excited so I bought in early.”

On his pre-meet routines:
“I try not to be superstitious about anything. I just eat good food and sleep a lot.”

On eating any special foods before running:
“I normally eat quinoa or oatmeal the morning of, but nothing special. I just try not to eat bad food.”

On his goals for the rest of the season:
“If things keep on rolling, I'd like to get in the top five or six at BIG EAST and try and shoot for All-American at Nationals.”

On the best reason for SU fans to support cross country:
“We need all the support we can get because cross country is not a very well-known sport. The more interest people take in it, it's exciting for us.”

On playing other sports growing up:
“I played everything growing up like hockey, football, baseball, and rugby. In grade 10, I just cut them all off and focused on running.

On why he stuck with cross country instead of another sport:
“I figured out I was better at running than the other sports.”

On the best piece of advice he's gotten from Coach Fox during his time here:
“Coach Fox has really helped me to try and keep things simple. I have a tendency to complicate things and he is very good about being flexible with your routine and just getting after the races. Training is important, but racing is what we do.”

On his favorite Coach Fox memory:
“I'd say maybe at Penn-Relays when we finished third. That was the most excited and crazy I've ever seen him. He was up on the fence jumping around, screaming at us, and it was pretty cool.”
