Speed Rating National Merge - 10/15 Update

Welcome to the first edition of the Speed Rating National Rankings, in what may be the most disjointed year in our Nation's sporting history. With nearly all national championships canceled this year, and some states pushing even local competition to next year, the landscape for high school cross country looks more different than ever before. In these strange times, we look to the tools we have to suss out what a national caliber race would look like.

Enter Speed Ratings.

This first look includes any team that has raced as a collective unit in the Fall 2020 Season, whether they did so as a club, unattached, or without key members of their team due to quarantine. Races may have been run in waves, in sections, or in total. The Speed Ratings aim to be the great equalizer, as we examine what's been going on the past month and a half of racing.

What Is The Speed Rating National Merge?

MileSplit NY has partnered with TullyRunners to provide a running merge of the nation's top performances. In short, a speed rating is a number attributed to an XC performance, roughly one point per three seconds, adjusted for overall race quality and depth. Using these numbers, we can compare performances on an apples to apples basis -- in terms of XC times and teams. It provides an answer to the hypothetical question, "What would happen if the best teams in the nation all raced at once?" However, these do not predict the outcome of NXN.

The merge predicts the outcome assuming every athlete had the best race of the season. NXN has many variables that will impact that outcome. More can be read about the calculation of speed ratings by clicking here.
