CIF State Champs Retro: LB Poly Wins 12th Overall 4x4 Title

MILESPLIT 24/7: STARTING FRIDAY -- THE 2019 CIF STATE TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS REPLAY

- - -

There may have been some nervy moments for the Long Beach Poly girls' 4x400 team last year at the CIF State Track and Field Championships.

After all, Eleanor Roosevelt owned a California state No. 1 of 3:43.77 heading into the state championships.

But every time the moment seemed to be getting out of reach, the Jackrabbits dug deep.

Case in point: After a conservative opener, with LBP handing off in third, the team's second leg bided her time until the final turn, deciding to pour it on in the final 100 meters with a 54-point (approximate) leg.

Then Long Beach Poly's third leg held strong throughout, holding off Eleanor Roosevelt and Oaks Christian --- even as she likely heard footsteps behind her.

But Roosevelt made a major move on the anchor, taking the lead with 250 meters left.

Long Beach Poly had to measure it just right. When to make the final move?

That patience, however, turned in the winning manuever as she made her deciding surge with 80 meters to go and helped the Jackrabbits claim their 12th overall overall 4x400 title in school history at the CIF Championships in 3:46.23.

The squad would finish the year California No. 2 and US No. 24 in the event with their time of 3:44.15 at the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet.
