Girls 200m Final - 2018 Outdoor States
Boys 200m Final - 2018 Outdoor States
Two seniors took their final bows at Outdoor States in 2018 at Cicero-North Syracuse and left the stage with clean slates in the 100m and 200m races. Their final individual championship races in the 200m are shown above. Lanae-Tava Thomas of Rush-Henrietta won her 200m race by more than a half second, and Carlon Hosten of Taft Educational Campus in the Bronx took his race by two tenths of a second.
For Thomas, though she still had two more relay legs to go and one more state championship to capture, the 200m win wrapped up the individual event races for her in a career that spanned five Outdoor States championship years and 8 Federation titles, and 10 Division 1 crowns in events that included the 100m, 200m, long jump, 4x100m, and 4x400m. She set meet records in her 2017 junior year in both the 200m at 23.42 and the long jump at 20-7.5. Some of the best competitions ever at States were the battles between Thomas and St. Anthony's Halle Hazzard in the 100m and 200m in 2016 and 2017, and Thomas would almost certainly have scored a 9th Feds outdoor crown if not for her sprints rival. Thomas began her Outdoor States career in 2014 as an 8th grader in the 200m, and she made it her event with three consecutive wins from her sophomore to her senior year. In her final season, her Feds wins came in the 100m at 10.74 (best was 10.65 in D1 finals), in the 200m at 24.35 (best was 23.64 in prelims), and in the 4x100m with the Royal Comets.
Hosten did not take his first Feds title at Outdoor States until his senior year in 2018, though he came close in the 100m in 2017 by taking the D1 title before getting edged by Nigel Green of William Floyd in the Feds finals. Hosten was the Feds winner in the 100m at 10.48 (a time he also matched in prelims) and in the 200m at 21.31 (best was 21.13 in prelims). Hosten had fairly comfortable wins in his D1 races, but competition was much tighter in the Feds action when he went up against D2 champ Jaheim Jones, the Our Lady of Lourdes junior who would sweep up the 100m and 200m Feds titles in 2019.
