Emanuel Joseph Takes Down Hurdle State Record At State Quals

The oldest Boys Indoor State Record still on the books has finally been wiped clean. Junior Emanuel Joseph (North Rockland) took down the 55HH State Record today, at the Section 1 State Qualifier. Joseph, who had already set the Junior State Record at 7.27 in early January, lowered his personal best to a 7.21 at the Armory.

That mark surpasses the prior State Record, originally established in 1987. Then, Joe Galeano (Centereach) had run 7.22 to win the Indoor State Meet, which was held at Cornell University. That mark lasted for 33 years before Joseph took it down earlier today. Ironically, the oldest Girls Indoor State Record was set on the same day, which was the 6-1 clearance in the High Jump. That mark now lives as the oldest overall record still on the books.

Joseph now moves to US #1 with his new personal best. It is the first time a New Yorker has held a US #1 position in an individual event at this point in the Season since Rai Benjamin ran 33.17 for Mt. Vernon HS in 2015. This is the 3rd overall State Record to go down this year, joining Girls Pole Vault and Girls Triple Jump.
