Every event carries that magic number. The number at which you've broken through a significant barrier, that good-to-great moment. For female Triple Jumpers, clearing that 40-foot barrier is rarified air. With two athletes well over that plain already, we can add a new name to that list.
Nia Williams-Matthews (Aquinas Institute) crested that plain this weekend, in capturing her League Title at the CCCSGA Champs at Nazareth College, a brand new facility being tested for future use by Section 5. Williams-Matthews ended the night with a new best of 40-2. The Section 5 Record of 40-11 was set back in 1997 by Marlena Robinson of Brighton.
The mark comes as a major breakthrough for the athlete, but not a complete surprise. Williams-Matthews took second in both the Long and Triple Jump Division 2 Championships last Spring, most notably with a personal best of 39-1 in the TJ. Williams-Matthews also carries a personal best of 18-5.75 in the Long Jump.
Williams-Matthews might soon have some company at home. Anaya Dees (Hilton) moved her Indoor PB to 39-5 this same weekend, and carries a 39-9 Outdoor Personal Best. With one more Triple Jumper over 40-feet by the conclusion of Outdoor Track, New York would match the most amount in a single scholastic year to what was accomplished in 2019.
