Junior State Hurdle Record Goes Down For Joseph In January

It's been a quick start to the season for Emanuel Joseph (North Rockland), who shot to the top of the State Rankings with his 7.46 debut without spikes in the 55HH mid-December.  To close out 2019, he donned those spikes, and his time dropped to a 7.43, just 0.01 off his personal best from a year before.  That 7.42 was tantalizingly close to the Sophomore State Record, held at 7.41, held by Greg Hines (Walt Whitman), and set nearly a decade before Joseph was born, back in 1992.

Well, a year deferred, and Joseph snatched up a different State Record.  At the Stanner Games, Joseph ran to a 7.27 winning performance, which knocks off Jay Hebert's (Ticonderoga) Junior State Record, set in 2013, en route to a State Title.  This came after a 7.47 in the trials.

Hines ran a hand-time 7.0 his Junior season, but because of the dubious nature of hand-timing, his 7.32 was deemed superior under the use of FAT timing.  The hand-time adjustment would be 7.24, but under official record keeping, only FAT marks can be used for official records when FAT is available as a technology.

Joseph's mark is now the second fastest mark ever run for the 55HH hurdles by a New Yorker.  The only mark higher is the overall State Record, and Senior Class Record, of 7.22, held by Joe Galeano (Centereach), set in 1987. The mark is also currently US #1, with no other athlete in the country have broken 7.30.  Last year was a banner year for the hurdles, with four separate athletes breaking onto the NY All-Time Top 40 List. In 2020, Joseph is looking to rewrite the very top.
