NYS XC Week 1: FM dominates; Shen opens up; Arlington sweeps;

Weekend Highlights:

VVS Invitational - The Fayettville-Manlius girls and boys both dominated the field as the girl scored a perfect 15 and the boys a near perfect 16 (of course still without Alex Hatz). To be completly honest - they both look very capable of winning national championships after looking at their TullyRunners.com speed rating. RESULTS AND SPEED RATINGS HERE

Guilderland Invitiational - Shenendehowa topped Burnt Hills 44-62 in the boys large schools race while Burnt Hils ran without its top runner Otis Ubriaco. Scott Maughn, however, finished first over the 4K course for BHBL in 14:47.47. Shen's Dan Harris finished second in 14:15.07. The Shen girls though, dominated the girls large schools race with 16 points behind a 1-2-3-4-6 performance led by senior caption Nicole Irving, who led Lizzie Predmore, Danika Simonson and Cara Janecko respectively.

Suffern Invitational - Kevin McKenna (photo left courtesy of LoHud.com) led Suffern to a win at it's home invitiational in 16:09.70 on the 3-mile course, helping the Mounties score 44 points in Varsity A to beat Sachem North. Suffern managed 69 seconds between its top five and finished with 103 points in the merge. In the girls Varisyt A race, Rush Henrietta topped Suffern, finishing its top four within 49 second of each other, ending with 67 points to Suffern's 89. Foot Locker finalist Aisling Cuffe of Cornwall showed a dominant early season form, winning the girls Varsity A in 17:22, 53 seconds ahead of Amanda Moreland of HFL and Queensbury's Brittany Winslow, two of the top runners in the state. HFL won the girls Varsity A with 55 points ahead of Queensbury's 65.

Boathouse Big Red Invitational - Arlington boys and girls both won Division I while Somers boys and girls both claimed Divison II at their home invitational. While there were a handful of meets last weekend scattered around New York State, this weekend really is the official start of the XC season.

One of the biggest meets this weekend is being held on the site of the 2009 NYSPHSAA Championships, Plattsburgh, NY. While the meet is mostly and upstate meet there are a handful of downstate and Western NY teams traveling for a preview of the course. TEAM ENTRIES HERE

Friday night is the Randolph Invitational, a night time meet under the lights in New Jersey. Iona Prep, Ursuline, Tri-Valley, Bronxville, Hastings, and Pearl River will all be racing.

Section 2, always an area to keep an eye on, hosts the Blackbird Invitational and the Shaker Invitational so you can bet those meets will start to give us some insight into the battle for section 2 supremacy. The Guilderland Invitational is also being held this weekend.

In Westchester, the Boathouse Big Red Invitational will host 32 teams on the course that will also host the Westchester County Championships later in the year. Pawling's Brandon Freyer, who should be one of the top boys in the state this year, is expected to make his XC debut in a Pawling uniform after transfering from Brewster and sitting out last fall. All the races have very deep fields. PHOTO TOUR HERE

The Suffern Invitational returns to Bear Mt. State Park and is expected to be another great field. Suffern usually has around 50 teams on the classic 3.0 mile course. RACE ASSIGNMENTS

Western, NY (and the southern tier) will see the JFK Earl Bird Invitational, The Marion Early Season Scramble, the Byron Bergen Invitational, and the Windsor NY-PA Invitational.
