New York cross country season opens

5 high school and 4 college meets held over Labor Day weekend

Fonda-Fultonville Invitational is an annual season opener in the Section 2 region of NY State, which is one of the best regions in the country. The Burnt Hills boys opened up well as Scott Maughn took the crown in 15:49, edging out LaSalle's Denis Hurley. Burnt Hills then went 3-4 with Otis Ubriaco and Chris Fernandez at 16:01 and 16:22 showing off that front three that everyone knew would be their strength this year.

Bob McDaniel Invitational- Max Straneva of Chenango Valley won easily in 17:11 and Union Endicott took the team title 47-69 over Ithaca. Sydney Williams won the girl race in 20:28 as the Ithaca girls won the team title 36-71 over Owego. Ithaca's Zoe Maclear, Amelia Kaufman, and Megan Mormile placed 4-5-6 to secure the win.

Niskayuna XC Ekiden- The Burnt Hills girls went 1-2 in the varsity, relay-style meet that always seems like a great way to open the season. The boys race was closer as Shen edged Ballston Spa by only ten seconds.

Wizard Invitational- The Arlington boys and girls won their races rather easily. The boys race was won by Martin Herir, who covered the 3-mile course in 15:52.2 to win by 42 seconds. Teammate Vinny DeSalvo did not race. The Arlington girls showed they are one of the best teams in the state again this year as Haley McMahon made her return to cross country and won the race in 18:48.6. Teammate Rachel Sorna was second only 3 seconds back as the Admirals scored 20 points to easily top Cornwall's 80.
