MileSplit50 Boys Team Rankings Countdown

Analysis: The team from FM finished fifth last year at NXN and won the New York Region meet. This year they have two of their top five and three of their top seven returning including seniors Sam Otis and Geoff Howles who were 41st and 184th at last years Nike Cross Nationals meet.

A preseason Q & A with head coach Bill Aris

How long have you coached (overall/at your school)?

I am starting my 29th year overall, including early volunteer years/ass't coach years,  all at fm.

What was one important moment over the summer with your team and why? (Camp/Preseason Meeting/Etc.)

VVS this Saturday,  ESM the following Saturday, Manhattan, then championship season.  College trips for seniors and training blocks dictate our schedules each year.

What's the focus on training over the summer for the varsity squad?

Every single day this summer was important, can't distinguish one day from the next. Aerobic volume, building progressively each week.

Which athletes do you see as a probable five/top seven this season?

Otis, Howles, Geehrer are our top 3 boys Walters, White, Kaercher, Kaercher top 4 girls.  With others vying for top 5/7 in both genders.

Which athletes have taken a bigger role in terms of veteran leadership? How have they shown it/what will you expect from them in 2019?

Our team captains have done a great job thus far: Otis, Howles and Walters, White, Grace Kaercher. Overall experienced leadership skills are what they have demonstrated and what I expect will continue

Who are some new faces who will make an impact in 2019? (i.e. freshmen, transfers, runners who've improved)
Too early to tell re new faces

Six weeks before the state championships, what's a staple workout that's readying this team fro the postseason run?

No workouts to note yet, haven't even thought about 6 weeks out from states, focusing on the current week.

What will success look like in 2019 for this team?

Every kid running to their absolute best thus far in their hs careers.

What's the biggest challenge facing this team this fall?

As usual, small team sizes..... means that every kid must remain healthy while striving to improve thru the season, easy to say but not easy to do.

Is there a quote or a saying, or a purpose your team lives by? What is it and why?

As in past seasons.....the process is the goal.

What are three big goals for this team in 2019?

Seek to improve our daily processes program-wide, keep our team healthy, strive for improvement team-wide thru the season.
