SELECTION OF THE ALL LONG ISLAND INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES
Plainview, NY - Representatives from the Nassau and Suffolk County Track Coaches Associations, NSCHSSA and USATF Long Island have come together to select the All Long Island athletes for the outdoor track and field season. Performances throughout the season were analyzed, debated and discussed with an emphasis placed on achievements in the championship meets (County/Intersectional, NY State and New Balance Nationals).
Three athletes were selected for each individual running and field event to comprise 1st, 2nd and 3rd team All Long Island. Athletes who could have qualified for selections in multiple events were assigned one selection in their most outstanding event. The committee also has awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd All Long Island selections in the 4x100, 4x400, 4x800 in addition to several other consistently run relay events contested at the National Championship meet.
The 2019 outdoor track and field season was a highly successful one for Long Island, highlighted by the committee's selection of two Most Outstanding Athletes of the Season in Kenneth Wei (Mount Sinai) and Zaria Fuller (Uniondale). Kenneth Wei, who was recently named the NY Athlete of the Year by Gatorade, had another track and field season for the ages earning individual state titles in the 110 hurdles, long and triple jumps. Additionally, his performances in the 110 hurdles and long jump earned him a pair of All American accolades at the National Championship. Zaria Fuller enjoyed similar success setting a pair of Long Island Records in the pentathlon and heptathlon. Her pentathlon performance earned her the State Championship by close to 200 points, while her heptathlon total placed her 3rd overall in the United States.
On the sprinting side of the sport, the committee selected Chibugo Obichere (Valley Stream South) and Giordano Williams (Uniondale) as the Long Island Sprinters of the Season. Obichere was a force for VSS this season going for 30 individual points in the Nassau County Championships after victories in the 100 hurdles, 100 and 200. She then continued on to the NY State Championships where she placed as the runner-up in the 100 hurdles. Williams likewise scored much needed points for his team, coming away with victories in the 100 and 200 at the Nassau County Championships. At the NY State Championships he earned the runner-up position and All State honors in both events as well.
The committee's choices for Long Island Distance Runners of the Season were Sarah Connelly (Mount Sinai) and Matthew Payamps (Saint Anthony's). Connelly went for 28 individual points in the Suffolk County Division Championships after victories in the 1500 and 3000, followed up by a 2nd place showing in the 800. At the State Championships, she captured the NY State Title in the 1500, only to follow that with a 2nd place finish at the National Championships in the two mile. Payamps added to a resume that rivals anyone's in NY State history. His PRs this season in the 800 (1:50.97) and 3200 (8:52.30) ranked him in the Top 10 in the United States in both events. He added to that with another State Championship, this season in the 3200.
Finally, the committee decided to honor Alissa Braxton (Commack) as the Most Outstanding Field Event Competitor and Jaheim Dotson (Longwood) as an Overall Outstanding Track & Field Competitor. This season, Braxton had amazing performances in the long and triple jumps with the top overall marks in the state. She added an individual state title in the triple jump, then went on to finish 3rd at Nationals in the event as well. Dotson continued his progression as one of the top hurdles in the United States with his performances in the 110 and 400 hurdles this season. His 110 hurdle performance earned him an individual state championship, while his time in the 400 hurdles gave him a 5th place finish and All American status at the National Championships.
The Long Island Track and Field Coaches Association would like to congratulate all of these outstanding athletes on a memorable and successful outdoor track and field campaign. Future All Long Island selections for cross-country and track and field will be made annually after the conclusion of each season.
