Ranking The Top Six Sophomore State Records In Each Gender

Girls Top Six

7. Sammy Watson's 1000m Soph National Record

Year Set: 2015

# Would Be US Ranked This Year: #2

Breakdown: It's strange seeing Sammy Watson at the bottom of any list, but it took a while before she got going to All-Time GOAT status.  Still, she was more than respectable in her younger years, picking off State Titles over 1000m at the old Cornell Track.  2:47.86 is no joke for 1000m, although we've seen a resurgence in the event over the past few years.

5. Natasha Hastings Runs 37.77 for 300m

Year Set: 2002

# Would Be US Ranked This Year: #2

Breakdown: This record has staying power, and with good reason.  Even with the unbelievable young talent we have this year in the 300m, that mark would still be US #2.  Hastings would go on to Olympic Fame, but not before dropping some more fast times before graduation.  But still, this may be one of the few soph records faster than the Junior Record that came after it, and we don't see this one going anytime soon.  It took Sydney McLaughlin to break it at the National level, as a note.

4. Lanae-Tava Thomas Reaches Out To 20-3 In The LJ

Year Set: 2015

# Would Be US Ranked This Year: #1

Breakdown: Although she has yet to jump yet in College (c'mon USC!), Thomas may be better called a jumper than a sprinter.  She let the world know that when she launched herself at Sectionals to a new Soph State Record, then bettered it a week later to 20-3 at State Quals.  It was the fourth furthest jump ever in NY at the time.

3. Kamryn McIntosh Sets 600m National Record

Year Set: 2015

# Would Be US Ranked This Year: #2

Breakdown: While another name on this list might be better known for her exploits in the 600m, it was Kamryn McIntosh who kicked off the race for the National Record back in 2015-16.  She had been an above average 800m runner before this, but the 600m seemed to be her perfect race, where she shocked the country with her 1:28.78 at Sectionals.  That mark still stands as US #3 All-Time to this day, and broke the National Record at the time, becoming the first ever under 1:29.00.

2. Katelyn Tuohy's 5K National Record

Year Set: 2018

# Would Be US Ranked This Year: #1

Breakdown: Of course this was going to come down to a Tuohy vs. Tuohy battle, but how do you differentiate between her two biggest efforts last year?  Yes, the 5000m was a National Record, but it is a oft less run distance. Still, it bettered the Outdoor National Record in the process, and was her first overall National Record on the books.  15:37.12 was also over a minute faster than the previous State Record.

1. Katelyn Tuohy's 9:05 for 3000m

Year Set: 2018

# Would Be US Ranked This Year: #2

Breakdown: The only thing more impressive than Tuohy's mark from the Ocean Breeze Freedom Games is that only one athlete has surpassed it since, in any grade, and that's Tuohy herself.  While it took Tuohy a pro field to bring her along to her current best of 9:01.81, she did this one all by herself, lapping the High School competitors round and round.  It's the Soph and Overall National Record Indoors, and will take the likes of another wunderkind to get within 25-seconds of this one anytime soon.
