New York Alumni on the Run at Nationals

We have the results for the New York alumni runners from the D1 and D3 races, including one who helped her Colorado team win a national championship. Also previewed here is the D2 championship in Pittsburgh, PA, where more than a dozen NY alumni will be running. Please let us know if there are NY alumni in the D1 and D3 meets that are not listed here and we'll get them in.


NCAA D1 Men

Who Ran from NY:   Conor Lundy (Princeton, Fordham Prep) 101,   John Rice (Texas, Xavier) 113, Aidan Tooker (Syracuse, Saratoga) 123,  Bryce Millar (Indiana, Fayetteville-Manlius) 136.  Noah Affolder (Syracuse, Carthage) 190.

Nationals Contest: Northern Arizona won the guys' D1 championship again, and the top showing for any team with an NY alumni was Bryce Millar's Indiana in 18th, while Princeton was 22nd, Syracuse 26th, and Texas 27th. Conor Lundy again led the old NY contingent with a 101st as the second of three consecutive Tigers finishing between 100 and 102. John Rice was also the second guy in for his team as he moved up exactly 100 places from last year to finish 113th. Noah Affolder did indeed end up jumping in for Syracuse at Nationals as the Orange had both him and Aidan Tooker on the line out in Madison.


NCAA D1 Women

Who Ran from NY:  Sage Hurta (Colorado, Hamilton) 22,  Jessica Lawson (Stanford, Corning) 44,   Amanda Vestri (Iowa State, Webster Thomas) 90,   Alexandra Hays (Columbia, Shoreham-Wading River) 101,  Kathryn Munks (Penn State, Monroe-Woodbury) 166,  Reilly Siebert (Villanova, Syosset) 199,  Maria Kogan (Columbia, Port Washington) 205,   Ella Ketchum (Dartmouth, Poly Prep) 225. 

Nationals Contest:  The big question for the NY alumni contingent was whether three-time XC state champion Sage Hurta would be on the line for Colorado as she had last raced on October 26th at the PAC-12 championship. Hurta had done extremely well in past D1 championships with a 40th in her freshman year and 35th last year. And yes she was there, helping to set the Buffaloes up for their first title since 2004. Hurta finished 22nd as the fourth Colorado runner in behind 1st-place teammate Dani Jones, and Tayler Tuttle sealed the deal for the Buffaloes two places back of Hurta in a decisive 38-point win over defending champ New Mexico. Another ex-NY XC state champion finishing high up was Stanford's Jessica Lawson, as she was the third Cardinal runner in for her 5th-place team while moving up 142 places from last year to finish 44th. Amanda Vestri also made gigantic leap of 70 places this year as she was the third Cyclone in for 15th-place Iowa State with a 90th place. Alexandra Hays fell one place short of the top 100, but she was the second Lion in for 18th place Columbia.



NCAA D2 Men - Watch Here

Who Is In from NY:  East Regional  Chris Davitt (Le Moyne, Bethlehem) 4, Michael Moreno (Southern New Hampshire, Monroe-Woodbury) 17, Shane Pease (Roberts Wesleyan, Greece Athena) 20.  Atlantic Regional  Ryan Clifford (Mansfield, Douglas MacArthur) 4, Corey Wefing (Edinboro, Maple Grove) 19

Nationals Contest: In the East regional, Le Moyne's Chris Davitt earned an at-large selection, while Michael Moreno's SNHU team was selected as a fourth team out of the region. In the Atlantic regional, Ryan Clifford of Mansfield got the at-large selection and Corey Wefing's Edinboro team placed 3rd to earn a qualifying spot.

Nationals Contest:  Roberts Wesleyan is 22nd ranked in D2, and six NY alumni ran for the Redhawks as Ashley Watson, Brittany Shumway, and Bailey Gostomski all finished in the top 20 in the East regional. St. Rose's Christine Myers ran well to earn an at-large selection. Edinboro placed 1st in the Atlantic regional, and four NY runners helped lead the Fighting Scots to the win led by Hope Pietrocarlo, Abbey Lang, and Tori Klimowicz with places in the top 15.

Nationals Contest:  Perennial champ North Central again dominated the D3 action, winning by 67 points. Top guy in from NY was Geneseo's Sean McAneny in 24th, as his Blue Knights finished 10th with Matt Sayre in the second spot at 62nd. Aidan Ryan was the second guy in for 8th-place Williams with a 42nd, Sean O'Connor was the second Engineer in for 13th-place RPi1 with a 48th, Rochester's Hunter Phinney was 49th, and Chris Hannan was 50th for 29th-place Oneonta. Two other guys who finished in the top 100 were Theo Henderson in 78th for 15th-place Middlebury and Dickinson's Eric Herrmann in 86th. Altogether, 25 NY alumni were running in the D3 race in Oshkosh.


NCAA D3 Women

Nationals Contest: Caelyn Reilly had emerged lately for reigning champs Johns Hopkins recently in a very big way, but the deep Blue Jays held her out of the Mideast regional in an easy qualifying win. Reilly was unleashed at Nationals and nearly carried her team to a repeat title with a 6th place finish though her team was edged 98-99 by Washington University. Another team doing well with a 5th place finish was the perennial local power SUNY Geneseo who had Genny Corcoran, Elise Ramirez, and Allie Fernandez placing  in the top 50. 21st-place Rochester got a top 50 finish from Rachel Bargabos at 42nd, and Emily Cavanagh of New Paltz was in the top 100 with an 84th. The final tally for NY alumni came to 24 among the 279 runners in the race.

And finally, a shout out to Suffolk Community College for leading the NY contingent on with 3rd places on both sides of the NJCCA D3 junior college championship back on November 3 in Westfield, MA. On the guys' side, Jonathan Gonzalez and Luis-Antonio Fernandez led the way for the Sharks with top 10 finishes. Taylor McClay and Allaura Dashnaw finished in the top 15 for the Shark women.
