All The Big Names Shine At New York State Meet

The NYSPHSAA - New York State Championships was this weekend in Kings Park, New York, at Sunken Meadow State Park.

There was a great deal of superb racing across the eight different divisions, but we've decided to break down some of the best below.

See how some of the nation's top talent performed this weekend on one of New York's toughest courses.

Class A Girls

1. Following news of a knee injury earlier this week, North Rockland's Katelyn Tuohy suited up at state and ran a strong race in Class A. The junior, who has crushed course records all year, ran 17:02.01 to take the win and was just off her course record of 16:52.97, which she set earlier this year at the Suffolk Officials Invitational. Just behind her was Saratoga Springs senior Kelsey Chmielwho ran one of the top all-time performances on the course in 17:20.6.

Fayetteville-Manlius' Claire Walters rounded out the top three with another all-around performance in 14:42.6.

But maybe the news of the day wasn't the nation's top runner. It was the first state loss in 13 years for the Fayetteville-Manlius girls.

Saratoga Springs went toe-to-toe with No. 13-ranked Fayetteville-Manlius (FM) and held on for a 1-point win with 46 points. Led by Chmiel, the program broke up the reign of the Hornets in Class A title for the first time in over a decade.

Ultimately the team battle came down to the Saratoga Springs' tight compressionFor much of the season,  FM had hoped to develop a fifth runner, but the good news is that it looks like they found two -- one in senior Chloe Bullough (20:09.8) and the other in sophomore Lejla Borcilo (20:15.13).

The duo who almost ran sub-20 minutes on a very challenging Sunken Meadows course. Despite the loss, FM could still make some noise at NXR New York, as will Saratoga Springs.

Class B Boys

2. Burnt Hills slammed the door on everyone else with 22 points, laying no doubt as to who the best boys team in New York is.

The squad was led by MileSplit50 No. 14-ranked Tyler Bergwho got the individual win with the second-fastest time of the day in 15:52.4. Rounding into second Maine-Endwell's Parker Stokeswho ran the second-fastest time of the day with his 15:57.0.

Class A Boys

3. The FM Boys had one of the more impressive ever team showings ever on the Sunken Meadows course.

The Hornets scored 25 points with a course record 16:14 average and 17-second compression. That spread beat the old mark of 16:21, last set by the Northport boys team back in 2013.

The MileSplit50 No. 5-ranked Hornets are now looking primed and ready to go for the NXR New York and could yet again be a threat for the NXN crown this year in Portland.

Individually, Saratoga Springs senior Shea Weilbaker proved he was the top cross country runner in the state by crushing a solo 15:52 to take the win.

Class D Girls

4. MileSplit50 No. 15-ranked Brooke Rauber took the win by nearly a minute, leading her team to a state title in the process.

The Tully sophomore ran 17:52, and was the only runner in Class D to break 18-minutes. She ran the fourth-fastest overall time on the day all alone.

Her team defeated Maple Grove by five points, scoring 45 points.
