This Year's Outlook
McQuaid finished only 5th in the S5-A last year, but the Knights have their top 4 back including States medalist Abel Hagos. In a S5-A with four fairly evenly matched teams vying at the top, McQuaid could become the favorite for a first title in three years if it can find some depth.

This Year's Outlook
Monroe-Woodbury broke through to end Warwick Valley's million-year streak of Sectional titles and take its first crown in 23 years in 2017. They were rewarded with a run in the States mud and a 6th place finish. Now after losing three of the top 5 from last year's champs including Mike Hannon, Trevor Ladue, and Keith Paik, the Crusaders find themselves possibly a little short-handed as they look to defend their title. Daniel Hynes, Andrew Yi, and Skylar Brodsky are back from last year's Sectionals top 20, but the Crusaders will need to find some depth in a hotly contested S9-A.

This Year's Outlook
The elite top 3 of Isaiah and Elijah Claiborne and Dan O'Connor are gone from a Northport squad that overcame the disappointment of a 2nd in Sectionals last year to finish 4th in the Federation and NXN-NY meets. But that big void of departed runners is likely going to make 2018 a rebuilding year for the Tigers. Sean Ryan and Thomas Fodor are back from Sectional top 20 places, but a lot of development work will be needed for Northport to catch up to Smithtown this year.

Ward Melville finished 3rd again in S11-A and lost States finalist Eric Zulkofske to graduation. The rest of the top 5 from last year's Sectionals are back for the Patriots headed by Chris Nienburg, and if a little more depth can be found, they may be able to overtake Northport for 2nd place in the S11-A.

This Year's Outlook
Silas Derfel is gone after a year in which he just kept piling up the honors, winning the McQuaid AAA and States A races, finishing 2nd at Federations, and finally placing 19th at NXN Nationals. His 2nd-place S4-A squad will miss him greatly in 2018, but the Little Red will still be competitive with States finalists Ben Supron and Alexander Simpson back. Corning is the big favorite again in S4-A, but Ithaca could again be up for a Federation bid if it can fill out the squad.
