This Year's Outlook
The Friars were projected as the top team in the CHSAA last year but struggled with injuries early on before fighting back to finish among the top 10 teams in the state rankings. Mason Gatewood won titles at Manhattan Eastern States, CHSAA championship, and Federation before ending his XC career with a 36th in Foot Locker Nationals. Gatewood and Patrick Kutch are gone from last year's varsity, but with five guys back St. Anthony's is far better stocked than any other team in the CHSAA. Matthew Payamps is back in full health after finishing 7th in the CHSAA last year and after spending the track seasons shadowing Gatewood in the duo's spectacular distance showcase. Fellow senior Brendan Dearie is back after a top 10 CHSAA place last year and actually has the top 2017 speed ratings among CHSAA runners in the NYC area. A big pack of seniors including Michael Barbaro-Barnett, Philip Polo, and Hunter Vierling provide a lot of depth, and junior addition Griffin Kudla should provide more power at the top. The Friars go for their 20th CHSAA title with the knowledge that the top seven returning runners are seniors, so this needs to be a big year.

Xavier Knights

Section: NY-BQ CHSAAClass: AColors: Maroon and blue

Xavier's Aidan Donahue is on his way to 2nd place and teammate Josef Raphael Oettl is not far behind as they helped lead the Knights to a second straight CHSAA championship.

Last Year's Summary: 9th in NXN-NY, 2nd in Federation, 1st in CHSAA, 1st in NY-BQ CHSAA

CHSAA Titles:  1931, 2016, 2017    CHSAA Individual Winners:

This Year's Outlook
After a run to two straight CHSAA titles that followed an 85-year drought, the Knights got crunched by a graduation wave that swept away the top 5 guys and all but one of last year's varsity from the championship. Though Xavier is still rated among the top two teams in the CHSAA as the 2018 season starts, this looks very much like a rebuilding year while trying to close the gap on a deep St. Anthony's squad. One of the advantages for the Knights is that none of their top three returners are seniors, so they will have a big ceiling and will be back for 2019 as well. Oliver Branham-Upton had his 2017 season cut short and is the highest rated returner, but sophomore Owen Hassler is close behind and owns a 23rd place finish in the CHSAA last year. Michael O'Brien, Ethan Rice, and Dylan Abernathy took the 2-3-4 spots in the CHSAA JV last year, so the 2018 Knights have a lot of upside, even if reaching last year's 171 TR speed rating is very unlikely.

Iona Prep Gaels

Section: WestchesterClass: AColors: Maroon and gold

Iona Prep's Pedro Bravo led the Gaels to a 6th place finish with an 8th in the CHSAA championship.

Last Year's Summary: 25th in Federation, 6th in CHSAA, 2nd in Westchester County

This Year's Outlook
Iona Prep was one of three teams that had three guys finish in the top 20 of CHSAA, and all but Tyler Dorsainville are back for 2018 along with four of the top 5 from last year's varsity. Pedro Bravo finished 8th in the CHSAA last year for the 6th place Gaels, and he and 20th place finisher Brendan Mulvany went on to place 65th and 66th at Feds. With a solid group to make up the top 5, Iona Prep starts the year rated 3rd in the CHSAA, and with the five guys all being juniors, the Gaels may be looking for big successes for two straight years.

Monsignor Farrell Lions

Section: NY-BQ CHSAAClass: AColors: Maroon and gold

Monsignor Farrell's Anthony Bentivegna and Killian McCole were the leaders for the Lions in the CHSAA championship last year.

Last Year's Summary: 9th in CHSAA, 5th in NY-BQ CHSAA

CHSAA Titles:  1979, 1981, 1985, 1994   CHSAA Individual Winners:  Ed Healy (1979), Neil Donahue (1984), Kevin Maxwell (1993), Dan Lewis (2005), Dan Galford (2011, 2012)

This Year's Outlook
Monsignor Farrell finished way back in 9th in the CHSAA last year, but the Lions have everyone back except #2 spot guy Killian McCole. and start the year rated way up at 4th in the CHSAA. Juniors Anthony Bentivegna and Christopher Praxis and seniors Andrew Rainbolt and Joseph Devito provide mid-level depth that the Lions may be able to build a top 5 contender with.

Chaminade Flyers

Section: NSCHSAAClass: AColors: Crimson and gold

Chaminade's Brendan McGrath ran with Cathedral Prep's Daniel Berhan last year on his way to a 15th place finish for the 5th place Flyers.

Last Year's Summary: 19th in Federation, 5th in CHSAA, 4th in NSCHSAA

CHSAA Titles:  1961, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1989, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2013   CHSAA Individual Winners:  James Daly (1951), Ed Dean (1961), Kevin Murphy (1989), Mike McKeever (1995, 1996), Andy Rupert (1997), Kevin McDermott (2004), Ryan McDermott (2006), William Slattery (2010), Tom Slattery (2013)

This Year's Outlook
The Flyers enter 2018 with some key losses from last year's squad but with still enough returners to be rated in the top 5 in the CHSAA. Brendan McGrath is back after a 15th place in the CHSAA, and John Kehrli and Brendon Hobbes also return from last year's top 5. The top 3 are seniors, however, so Chaminade will need to start working some younger guys into the lineup this year.
