Charlotte Beach, Rochester - Five days before his 14th birthday, Middle Schooler Kegan Mancabelli (Orchard Park) vaulted higher than any 7th Grader had ever before. Classifying up in the Spring, he finished 5th among all participants at the Spring Section 6 Qualifier, with a best of 11-0, repeating a height he had cleared at ECIC's the week before.
Flash forward to the Summer, and the bar has been raised. Competing at the 2017 Rochester Rockback Beach Vault, Mancabelli skyrocketed to a new personal best clearance of 12-5. The mark placed him 35th overall on the day, in a competition that included Open and Collegiate athletes as well. The mark is a new 7th Grade State Records. State Records may be attained for the current grade up until August 31st of the new school year.
There was no previously recorded 7th Grade State Record, although the proximity to the former 8th Grade State Record was used as justification. That record stood at 12-6, until it was pushed to 12-9 in 2015. The 7th Grade National Record is currently held by Mondo Duplantis, who holds the Age Group World Records for ages 7 through 12. The 13-year-old World Record is 15-3, held by Norway's Pal Hagen Lillefasse.
