NY girls ranked 1-2 in US in the shot put

Competing at The Dartmouth Relays in New Hampshire, junior Melissa Kurzdorfer of Lancaster, NY had a personal best toss of 47-09, the 2nd best throw by a New York high school girl ever and a new junior class state record. It is also the best throw in the country so far this year.

There has been some discussion if this is already a NY State record. Apparently the state record holder, according to long time record keeper Larry Byrne (who keeps the all time state "Blue Book" lists) is 48-03 by Stacey Schroeder of Grand Island, NY, set back in 1992.

The story goes that Schroeder did not compete in indoor track and field and that her record throw was made in Toronto, Canada meet on 9 February 1992. Some have suggested that this meet was actually held outdoors in February in Canada, which is very hard to believe.

Now I can not say what the NYSPHSAA record is or isn't, but anyone who has spent anytime around NY State track and field for any period of time knows that the records that NYSPHSAA lists on their website are not even close to being accurate. http://www.nysphsaa.org/records/g_indoor.asp

The official record that Larry Byrne recognizes, and therefore that we at ArmoryTrack.com recognize, is 48-03 from 1992 by Miss Schroeder. We will be the first to congraulate Miss Kurzdorfer WHEN she does break the shot put record.

We will also be among the first to congraulate her if and when she breaks Kristen Callan's 57-01.75 weight throw record, which by the way, is an event that NYSPHSAA doesn't even recognize.

Aditionally, how exciting is it to have two of the best NY shot putters ever to be competing at the same time. North Babylon's Vanessa Stewart, also a junior, has already thrown 46-11.76, which is US#2 and also surpassed the old junior class record. One downside is that Kurzdorfer lives in the Buffalo area while Stewart lives on Long Island. Either way they'll meet in the middle at Cornell for the NY State championships,a nd you can et we'll be there to see who comes out on top.
