CENTRAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS PREVIEW
By Bill Coren(Strath Haven)

Saturday 10-18-2008  BOYS 2:00  Girls 2:30

BOYS TEAM
PENNCREST(2007 1st) will at least share the crown as they went 11-0 during the dual meet battles. They have a strong #1 and way more depth than the other teams and therefore rate to win the 12 team battle(HARRITON and GARNET VALLEY have joined our league).
LOWER MERION lost by 1 point to PENNCREST last week, and they will hope their #4 and #5 won't be too far back. Their #1 and #2 are Senior STUDS and their #3 is a tough Senior as well.
SPRINGFIELD(2nd at DELCOS) is peaking at the right time as they defeated STRATH HAVEN(3rd) and HAVERFORD this past weekend.  Those 3 teams are all strong and might make a run at LOWER MERION for 2nd.

BOYS INDIVIDUALS
Furcht(LM) is the class of the Central League(He may be the class of the STATE as well?). Winning Paul Short he demonstrated how good he is!(By the way he was only 4th at Centrals last year). His running mate Berman(LM)(3rd at Paul Short) will battle it out with Bonaventure(PC)(DELCO CHAMP).

Current records in dual meets--LOWER MERION 10-1, HAVERFORD 10 -1, STRATH HAVEN 9-2, RADNOR 9-2

The winner of this CHAMPIONSHIP race will be the CENTRAL LEAGUE 2008 CHAMPION!!

STRATH HAVEN(2007 1st) appears to be peaking at the right time as they handily outdistanced the field on the same course at Rose Tree scoring 57 points to HAVERFORD's 117. HAVERFORD and LOWER MERION are both capable of winning this race.  HAVERFORD was the D1 CHAMP at Briarwood and LOWER MERION just crushed the field at Bull Run(MD) representing our league in fine fashion.  Don't count out RADNOR(the only STATE CHAMPION TEAM ever in our league) who also won the Bulldog race this year.

GIRLS INDIVIDUALS
6 girls have the best shot to be the Central League Champ---
Soph. Rutkowski(SH) won DELCOS on Saturday-Freshman Meehan(HAV) was a close 2nd-Soph.SH teammate Meyer was 3rd (but will not run Centrals)-Jr.Freedman(RAD) was 5th and she was 2nd in the 2007 League race-and Sr. Goeke(GARV) was 8th but will have a legitimate chance in her first Central League Championship. And let's not forget the most improved Central League runner---Sr.Piccoli(LM) destroyed the Maryland field and has trained and is ready!

By Michael Carpenter
The Shikellamy Classic on Saturday had plenty of impressive finishes, including a wire finish in the boys varsity race. But the main story has to be centered around Sophia Ziemian of Lewisburg and her course record finish in 18:19.  Ziemian, now a SR at Lewisburg, has been on everyone's radar after her 17:35 5k at Nike Outdoor Nationals in June, and then her SB 18:08 at the Big Valley Inv in late August.  But at the classic, Sophia was untouched in her incredible performance, followed by her teammates Kiah Hardcastle, 2nd in 18:52, and Shannon Wright, 4th in 19:26, which led to a Lewisburg team title with only 39 pts. At least the course record was kept in the Lewisburg family. The mark of 18:32.9 had been set last year by Casey Miller.

The mens race may not have seen any records fall, but it was quite an exciting finish. Tyler Erhard of East Juniata and Ian Eisenhauer of Jersey Shore raced to the finish, both posting a 16:35 with Erhard earning the win.  But the excitement continued when Mike Davis and Chris Brandt of Danville raced to a 3-4 finish, both posting a 16:38. Teammate Tyler Barnhart was 5th in 17:06, and Danville would go on to win the team title over Jersey Shore, 59-62.
