Corning Clinches Course Record Sweep - McDaniel Baxter Pre-State Recap

Boys Race 7 Individual

Notes: In what was the most loaded race of the day, two runners quickly separated from the field.  Patrick Perry (Fayetteville-Manlius) and Kevin Moshier (Corning) were shoulder-to-shoulder by 800m, pushing the pace in unison.  They knew what was at stake, as both represented teams in strong contention for the win.  But they had to have faith in their teammates to get the job done, as their concentration would shift to that of each other.  By two miles, the pair were still together, approaching the most difficult part of the course.  Perry began to find an opening, creating a gap on the rolling hills of the course.  With 600m to go, Perry had a 65m gap on Moshier.  That's when it happened.  Unfamiliar with the course, Perry made an incorrect turn, and veered the wrong direction, too far away from the competition for anyone to correct.  Moshier stuck to his race plan, turned into the finishing straight, and saw the clock.  He knew he was within course record time, and gave one final surge.  He came across the line just under the course record set by Ryan Sheridan in 2004, granting his team the coveted sweep of both course records.  Perry, realizing his error, retraced his steps back onto the course, and managed to come back for second, proving that knowing the course is an integral part of elevated racing.

Boys Race 7 Team

Notes: While this race was set up to be one of the closest of the competition, it turned out to be less so.  That's because Corning came out of the gates swinging, putting their fourth runner in before anyone elses second.  Last year's runner up at the State Meet is showing they are a force in 2016, and will be very tough to beat.  For second place, Ithaca and Manlius tangled, finishing close to each other, despite Ithaca dealing with the slow recovery of their top returner, Jake Avery.
