Mikey Brannigan Takes The 1500m Gold Medal in the Paralympics in Rio!

Earlier today, Mikey Brannigan took home his first Paralympic Gold Medal.  Running in the Paralympic 1500m T-20 final, Brannigan was able to kick away from a quality field, capturing first place for Team USA.  His winning time of 3:51.73 may not have been his fastest, but with conditions muggy and temps hitting 97 degrees, the World Record of 3:48.85 was not to be.

Brannigan took control from the gun, leading capable competition through the first 400m.  His pace intensified, splitting 2:09.34 for the first 800m

In the same form Brannigan displayed in his prep career at Northport High School in Long Island, New York, it was the final lap kick that pulled him away from the competition.  With 300m to go, Brannigan surged through the final turn, turning competition into a race against the clock.  Brannigan would cross the line unchallenged, winning in 3:51.73.

The time comes within one second of Matthew Centrowitz's winning 1500m time in the Rio Olympics, run in much more favorable conditions.  Brannigan recently joined the Sub-4 Miler club earlier this month, and now has a Paralympic Medal to his name.
