Girls 1500m

Event Info: 2015 Winner: Sammy Watson (Rush Henrietta-Sperry) 4:25.24, State Record: 4:04.62, Meet Record: 4:17.84, State Qualifier Mark (FAT): 4:38.14 (D1) - 4:47.64 (D2)

State of the Action

What a field established here, where a 4:40 will not make the seeded heat.  Your top five athletes will be running on tired legs, as they are the top seeds in the 3000m as well, but that hasn't stopped them, as they have been doubling all season.  That would make Kelsey Chmiel the top threat.  Her 4:23.81 is the 5th fastest time ever run in New York State, and it was done relatively alone.  Jessica Lawson has been dropping her personal best, and increasing the speed work, week after week, and has been getting closer to 4:23 territory.  Abbey Wheeler, not to be overlooked, is right on her shoulder, and will be looking to take the win.  Diana Vizza ran totally alone at her qualifier simply to bump up her speed, and the double donned two new personal bests.

A year ago, if you told us that Sammy Watson would be doing the 1500m again this year, and she wouldn't get a mention until the second paragraph, we'd call you crazy.  But the 1500m is the first time in a long time where Watson will be the underdog.  Chmiel pushes the pace at a constant rate, and Lawson has a kick just as race-ending as Watson.  Watson won the race last year, but just barely, easing across the line.  There won't be any easing this year.  Katelyn Tuohy will be looking to drop down her 8th Grade State Record, and Sage Hurta is in the mix for the D2 double.
