Drew Hunter Could Break 4:00, And The Armory Track Invite Offers So Much More

Men's Elite Mile
2:19 Saturday

Alan Webb is the only high school boy ever to break four minutes in the mile indoors, in any circumstances. He also has an opinion that his two-member club is about to double in size:

Drew Hunter was a little more reticent about the possibility being realized this weekend, telling us on the podcast that whether or not he broke four at this particular meet, he was more focused on the process than the outcome.

We're treading in unexplored waters here. No high school boy has ever broken 8:00 in the indoor 3K, so we don't know what exactly Hunter's 7:59 last weekend forebodes.

Not that betting on high school athletics is ethical or legal, but after Hunter's assault on the eight-minute barrier last weekend, betting against him would be--hypothetically--inadvisable. According to the IAAF scoring tables, his 7:59.33 equates to roughly a 4:01.22 mile. When, relative to the Camel City meet, you take into account a deeper pro field and a banked track, sub-4:00 seems utterly possible.

I predicted before the season that Hunter would break 8:30 for two miles but not 4:00 for one. Before even the Super Bowl, I retract that. Hunter may or may not break four this weekend, but he will before he becomes a Duck.
