Girls Team Race
State of the Action: From the gun, Fayetteville-Manlius' mission was clear to the crowd: improve upon the already spectacular performance put on at States. While the individual race was left in the hands of Kaitlyn Neal, the next seven girls were putting on a show of their own behind. At a mile and a quarter, they were under 30 points, despite many of the frontrunners in the field also serving as team scorers. Reigning State Champ Claire Walters and 2014 State standout Sophie Ryan were leading the effort, but Manlius had their entire Top 7 within the Top 20, in one of the deepest NXN Regions in the country. They would continue to power through the race, their score only expanding 7 points from the halfway mark, to easily win the race. The race for second and third, however, was quite interesting. Saratoga came across halfway just nine points ahead of East Aurora. The Blue Streaks had to run great on the second half, to put themselves in safely, as they have the prior seven years. With the mission clear, they began to hold on to the strong pace. Across the line, Saratoga would finish with 80 points, holding their scoring positions almost the same, to a person as their halfway mark. That same perseverance benefited another team as well. North Rockland girls had 117 points at halfway. Through the surges and sprints, they finished exactly the same, and would push forth to third place, an effort that would eventually grant them an At-Large bid, the first time a team from Section 1 has ever made the trip. |
