State of the Action: For the frontrunnners at the Federation Champs, it was a balancing act. For Kelsey Chmiel, who had gone out aggressively from the gun at Monroe-Woodbury, the pace was more even. For Jessica Lawson, who had sat just a little too long to give up the State Title, she was right to the front, sitting on the leaders. The race went out strong, the pack maintaining itself through the first mile. Many of the major players were still in contention at the halfway mark, towards the first road crossing. Chmiel and Lawson had separated from the fray, but names like Mary Hennelly, Abbey Wheeler, and Katelyn Tuohy were nipping at their heals. But then, Chmiel made her move. Attacking the backhills as the path narrowed
out, Chmiel put it a gap on Lawson. Coming back down the loop, the gap
had grown to 40m. She accelerated down the dirt straightaway, the flats before the downhills. Lawson had recognized the move, and began to edge closer, followed closely by Abbey Wheeler, also looking for redemption from her States performance. On the first surge downhill, the Section 4 duo utilized it better than frontrunner Chmiel, coming even with the Freshman at the mile to-go mark. As happens every year, that's where the leader takes off. Lawson surged down the slight downhill grade, breaking the lead. Wheeler recognized the move, and followed closely. while Lawson began to pull away, Chmiel and Wheeler still battled for second place, barely strung out behind. Through the finishing stretch, Lawson powered to the line, clocking the 8th fastest time ever run at Bowdoin, 5th fastest athlete ever. Wheeler had broken away in the final stages, and came through for second, while Chmiel came home in third. |
