Pottsville's Phil Cavaluchi led a tight group in the 55, winning in 6.4. Three other athletes ran 6.5 in either the prelims or finals. Lauren Redington of Shikellamy took the girls' 55 in 7.1. Montoursville's Michael Keenan was a double winner, going 7.7 in the 55 hurdles and 24.8 in the 200. Canton senior Garth Watson took the 3000 in 9:21.6.

1/18 DVGTCA Indoor Meet #7

Friday night at the DVGTCA Indoor Meet #7 @ Lehigh, Penncrest senior Karen Shump cracked the big 5-0 in the shot put - bettering that magic distance by 3.25". Council Rock North ran alone to a 9:33.6 4x800. And Meghan Lutz, Nazareth Academy, was solo as well in a 10:22.1 3K.

There were some impressive performances last night, beginning with a new US#1 shot put throw by Karen Shump, Penncrest. Shump broke through the 50 foot barrier, throwing 50-03.25. In the 3200 meter relay Council Rock North ran solo to a time of 9:33.6. Also running solo to an impressive 3000 meter run victory was Megan Lutz, Nazareth Academy, 10:22.1. For the rest of the distance events Marie Thompson, Downingtown East, won the 800 in 2:20.2 and Megan Rother, VIlla Joseph Marie, won the 1000 in 3:07.4.
 
In the sprint events Brittany Wallace, Penn Wood, ran 25.9 seconds to win the 200 meter dash by a large margin. St. Basil's Colleen Gilmore won the 600 meter dash in 1:40.2 and Rachel Hunter, Downingtown East, took the 400 in 1:00.5. Abington's Nicole Grasty won the 300 meter dash in 42.9. Shannon Daniels, Central Bucks East, won the 60 meter dash in 7.8 seconds while Phoenixville's Lauren Terstoppen won the 60 hurdles in 9.3 seconds.
 
In the field Courtney Kedra, Phoenixville, won the long jump with a mark of 17-08.25 and Joelle Neilson, Girls High, took the triple jump with a leap of 35-09.00. Christy Ohmott, Hatboro-Horsham, won the pole vault with a height of 10-6.00.
 
Roundiing out the relays, Central Bucks East won the 800 meter relay with a time of 1:47.5 to beat Penn Wood, 1:48.2. In the 1600 meter relay North Penn, 4:10.5, finished 2nd to Padua (DE), 4:09.8.

 

1/18 Franklin & Marshall HS Invitational #2

Vince McNally, Conestoga Valley, stands out as an excellent performer at F&M with his solo effort in the 3000 meter run. Vince's time of 8:53.20 was 38 seconds up on 2nd place and shows that he is in shape for the Millrose Mile. Also performing well were pole vaulters Jocelyn Witmer, Penn Manor, and Quinn Staley, Lampeter-Strasburg. Jocelyn won the girls vault in 12-00 while Quinn won the boys vault in 14-00.
 
In the sprints Brooke Mathews, Indian Valley, was a double winner, running 1:01.14 to take the 400 and 26.44 to take the 200. Devan Coon, Schuylkill Valley, won the 55 dash in 7.49 and was 2nd in the 200, 26.58. Harrisburg teammates Alysha Cook and Leon Bullock won the 55 hurdle events. Alysha won in 8.69 and Leon won in 7.77. Robert Dixon, J.P McCaskey, won the 200 in 23.15.
 
In the field Hanif Johnson, Harrisburg, won the triple jump in 45-09.75 and teammate Matt Davis won the long jump in 21-05.00. Milton Hershey's Samantha Mealing won the shot put in 35-06.00.

McDowell's Dan Kwiatkoski threw 59-01.00 to win the shot put competition on Friday. Today he will be competing in the shot put at the Kent State HS Open. John Timmons, Greater Latrobe, and Joe McConbie, Indiana Area, finished 1-2 in the pole vault with both clearing 13-06.00. Dan Sandrowicz, Indiana Area, won the triple jump with a leap of 44-08.75. Matt Belay, Montour, won a closely contested 55 meter dash in 6.4 seconds. DaJoun Heidelberg, Cathedral Prep, and Bisi Ezekoye, Central Catholic, were 2-3, also timed in 6.4 seconds. Upper St. Clair's Eric Kasvnich won the 55 meter hurdles in 7.8 seconds, with Dave Lalatshoff, Plum, 2nd in the same time. Seneca Valley won the DMR in a time of 11:13.0.
 
For the girls, Seneca Valley also won the DMR, with a time of 13:04.7. Natalie Bower, Greater Latrobe, won the 1600 meter run in 5:18.5. Saltzburg's Nellie Kennedy won the shot put with a throw of 40-02.50. Kim Kanaula, Hempfield, was 2nd with a throw of 39-02.50.
 

1/18-19 Yale Track Classic

Downingtown West and Great Valley took their teams to the Yale Track Classic. DTW's girls posted a 7th place 1:50.77 in the girls Championship 4x200, and added another 7th place in the Championship DMR for the boys, going 10:54.16. Christen Arnold was 4th in the long jump with a leap of 16-10, and made the semis of the 55 after a 7.54 in the prelims. For Great Valley, Eric Fernandes was 3rd in the pole vault at 13-06. In the Small Schools division races, the Patriots were 1st in the boys 4x800 at 8:11.44, and 5th in the DMR with their 11:03.78.

 

1/18-20 Colgate Women's Games #4

William Penn Charter's Elyse Wilkinson drops two elite times in the Colgate Women's Games #4. Wilkinson took second in the 800m with a time of 2:18.4 and ran to a 59.6 third place finish in the 400m. Carver HSES's Jonae McCallister placed 6th in the 400m with a time of 61.1 and took 9th in the 200m with a 27.1. Upper Dublin's Alex Brasington finished 3rd in the 1500m with a time of 4:53.4 and William Penn's Zatirah Green posts a 7.4 in the 55m to grab a 5th place finish.

 

1/19 Akron Kangaroo Relays

Out in Ohio Pittsburgh Central Catholic put together a nice time in the 800 meter relay, winning in 1:32.72. Central Catholic also won the 1600 meter relay in a time of 3:36.03. In the men's pole vault Altoona's Jared George finished first with a height of 14-06.00.

1/19 Glen Mills Girls Invitational #1

Padua ran a strong time in the DMR to beat Unionville. Padua was timed in 12:47.9 while Unionville ran a time of 13:14.3. Gwynedd Mercy sprinter Taylor Bumpas took 2nd in the 400 meter dash in a time of 61.5 Ambrosia Iwugo (VA) won in 60.3 seconds. WC Henderson's Carly Hamond won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:22.9. Alanna Owens, Rustin, won the shot put with a throw of 41-11.00. Upper Darby's Chanel King was 2nd with a throw of 35-01.25.

 

1/19 Kent State HS Open #1

In the sprint races Jeravin Matthews, Canon-McMillan, finished 5th in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.79 and Eric Kasunich, Upper St. Clair, finished 7th in the 55 hurdles with a time of 7.97. Jeravin Matthews also finished 7th in the long jump with a mark of 21-02.50. For the girls sprints Elizabeth Kline, Upper St. Clair, finished 3rd in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.77 and Taylor Funk finished 5th with a time of 8.97.
 
For distance events, T.J. Hobart put together a good double, finishing 3rd in the 800, 1:58.67, and 1st in the mile, 4:30.69. Christian Brandstetter, Peters Township, was 7th in the 800, 1:59.78, and Kyle Gibson, Canon-McMillan, was 3rd in the mile, 4:34.59. For the girls, Jenn Haffner, Baldwin, was 2nd in the 800, 2:23.67, and teammate Kristie Domis won the 3200 meter run, 12:19.35.

 

1/19 Kutztown High School Invitational

Some close calls in the 55 events as well as the pole vault mark the boys meet at Kutztown on Saturday. State College runner Alex Kenney won the 55 dash in 6.61 seconds. Second and third were just 1/100th of a second back with Romas Mayne, Reading, taking 2nd and Trevin Brandon, Bethlehem Catholic, taking 3rd. In the 55 hurdles Dover teammates Matt Coston and Kevaughn Davidson were 1st and 2nd with times of 7.99 and 8.01 respectively. Barnard Goodwyn, Glasgow, took the 400 in 50.81 while State College sprinter Alex Kenney doubled back from his 55 win to take the 200 in 22.94 seconds.
 
In the field Tim Layny, Conton won the pole vault with a height of 14-00 and was matched by Percell Berry, Methacton, who was 2nd with a leap of 14-00. Dan Clabattoni, Holy Name, won the triple jump over Canton Lavong, Methacton, 43-06 to 43-05.25. Pottstown's Ray Quill took the high jump with a leap of 6-04. Nathan Zonodlo, Pittston, ran a 9:08.65 to win the 3000 meter run over Doug Jankowski, Phillipsburg, who ran 9:15.24. Easton won the 3200 meter relay in a time of 8:18.53.
 
A typical distance runner double and a not-so-typical distance runner double stand out at last Saturdays girls competition at Kutztown. Chloe Schmidt, State College won both the 1600 run and 800 run in times of 5:16.75 and 2:22.89. Nice runs for this time of year, but then Heather Giovagnoli won an unusual double, the 3000 meter run and the 400 meter dash. Heather ran 10:37.68 to win the 3000, and ran 1:02.78 to win the 400.
 
In the sprint events Hilary Monger, Holy Name, won the 55 hurdles in 8.97 and Teresa Simpson, Easton, won the 55 dash in 7.34 seconds.
 
In the field Abby Schaffer, Easton, won the pole vault with a mark of 11-06 to win by half a foot. Saniel Atkinson, Bishop McNamara, won the high jump in 5-04 and was second, 37-06, in the triple jump to Kristin Brandt, Central Mountain, 37-08.75. Breanna Kennedy won the shot put with a throw of 42-09.50.

 

1/19 Lavino Relays

PA boys won 3 relays and finished 2nd in two others to post an impressive showing at the Lavino Relays in NJ. The wins came in the 800 meter relay, sprint medley relay, 1600 meter relay. Neshaminy won the 800 meter relay with a time of 1:34.0. Archbishop Ryan won the sprint medley relay with a time of 3:39.7. Holy Ghost Prep finished 5th in the event with a time of 3:45.8. Lastly, Council Rock North won the 1600 meter relay with a time of 3:30.1.
 
The runner-up showings came in the 3200 meter relay and distance medley relay. Holy Ghost Prep finished 2nd in the 3200 meter relay with a time of 8:05.7. Archbishop Ryan finished 3rd in the event in 8:12.9, and Bensalem finished 4th in 8:18.5. Council Rock North finished 2nd in the DMR with a time of 10:51.1. Archbishop Ryan was a close 3rd, running a time of 10:52.4. Mercersburg Academy finished 4th in 11:00.0, while Neshaminy finished 6th in 11:12.0.
 
There was also success for PA in the field, as Glen Mills won the high jump relay with a combined effort of 12-00.00 and Bensalem won the triple jump relay with a combined effort of 82-11.00. Archbishop Ryan was 2nd with a combined mark of 79-04.50. Neshaminy and Archbishop Ryan were 2-3 in the high jump relay with marks of 11-11.00 and 11-08.00. Glen Mills finished 3rd in the shot put relay with a distance of 95-08.50 and Council Rock North was runner-up in the pole vault relay with a height of 23-06.00.

1/19 TFCAGP D1 Indoor Meet #7

Fast relays mark the highlight reel at last Saturday's D1 meet at Haverford College. Abington and Upper Dublin both went under the 3:30 barrier for the 1600 meter relay. Abington won the event in 3:28.6 while Upper Dublin trailed by only 1 second in 3:29.6. Central Bucks East broke away from the pack to post a fast DMR time of 10:39.5, leading two other teams under the 11 minute barrier. Pennridge was 2nd and North Penn was 3rd, both timed in 10:59.1. Close on their heels was a St. Joe's Prep squad who posted a time of 11:01.6. North Penn won the 800 meter relay in a time of 1:34.8, and Downingtown East won the 3200 meter relay in 8:19.7.
 
In the individual sprints Khaliff Featherstone won the 400 meter dash in 50.5 while teammate Frank Wainwright took the 60 hurdles in a time of 8.2 seconds.
 
In the distance category Dan Lowry broke the 2 minute barrier, running a time of 1:59.6 on his way to victory in the 800. Seth Hobbs won the 3000 meter run in 9:09.1 with Upper Dublin's Pat McLaughlin in 2nd with a time of 9:13.9.

 

1/19 TFCAGP D2 Indoor Meet #7

Engineering and Science ran a fast meet record time of 10:27.6 in the Distance Medley Relay. The squad consisted of Elliot Rhodes, Dwayne Hyman, Austin Perron, and Terrence Lee. The meet record bettered Wissahickon's 2007 mark of 10:31.3. Penncrest was 2nd in 10:44.1 and Germantown Friends finished 3rd in 10:47.3. Mike Vido, Springfield-Montco, won the 3000 meter run in 9:14.6. Sean Unterkoefler, Exeter, won the 60 meter dash in 7.0 seconds.

Chanelle Price beat a strong field over 500 meters at the New Balance Games, and demolished an impressive US record in the process. Price ran a time of 1:10.30, which was 1.14 seconds faster than the previous record. According to Mike Kennedy, T&F News Women's HS editor, this time is #3 on the all-time Juniors list. Council Rock South's Ijeoma Iheoma finished 3rd in the 500 meter run in 1:14.05.
Nick Crits, Wissahickon, finished 4th in the Invitational mile run with a time of 4:17.07. Nick lead the race early and hung on to a pack of 4 runners which had broken away from the rest of the field.
Tony Shirk, Phoenixville, won the pole vault competition with a PR height of 15-06.00.
Stepfon Allen, Coatesville finished 2nd in the long jump with a leap of 22-00.50.
Paul Robeson ran a PA#1 3:58.25 in the 4x400, for 4th place.
Conestoga won the 3200 meter relay in a very fast 9:11.48. Individual splits were:
Kacie O'Neil 2:17.9 (65)
Megan Deakins 2:17.9 (66)
Marta Klebe 2:18.6 (66)
Carly Niness 2:16.5 (64)
Conestoga also ran the 1600 meter relay, finishing 5th in a time of 3:58.73 and 1:44.86 in the 4x200 trials, with Chester going 1:45.11 and Paul Robeson 1:45.48 - the top 3 in PA.
Father Judge won the boys 1600 meter relay in a time of 3:25.99. They also finished 5th in the 800 meter relay with a time of 1:31.01.
Girls' High of Philadelphia won the triple jump relay, with Joelle Neilson jumping 37-1, and Jasmine Wanamaker in at 35-4.
Chester was 2nd in the Sprint Medley in 4:09.14.
Swenson took 3rd in the 800 meter relay with a fast 1:43.54. Penn Hills was 5th in the 800 meter relay with a time of 1:44.24.
Jason Johnson, Cardinal O'Hara, moved into PA#3 in the triple jump with a 46-00.00 effort.
 
 
Tony Shirk, Phoenixville, was the top vaulter - Nick Crits, Wissashickon, 4th in a fast mile - Conestoga girls (photo courtesy of wingedfootfotos.com) win 4x800 in quick order.

In West Virginia a handful of PA kids recorded elite times. Aleesha Washington, Laurel Highlands, won the 60 meter dash in a time of 8.01. She also won the 200 meter dash in 27.45. Devin Polzot, Aliquippa, won the boys 60 meter dash in 7.48. And Laurel Highlands Nathaniel Hensh won the pole vault with a mark of 13-06.00.

The race also features Council Rock South's Ije Iheoma. In the Boys Mile, Wissahickon's Nick Crits tests himself against a loaded field. Dan Kwiatkowski of McDowell, the top shot putter in the US, is in Ohio at Kent State. Lots of Philly-area action. Another deep one at Kutztown. TSTCA is at it again. Now, it gets really good.
