2014 Season Overview for Class A
Two facts leap out while filling out the top team and runners lists for 2014 for Class A. The teams for the top 20 entrants are averaging more than 3 points higher than the team that filled the same spot last year, and the top returning runners are on the youngish side with only 7 seniors among the top 20. Two constants are that Fayetteville-Manlius occupies the top spot, but at a 4 point higher level than last year, and that Hilton is in the 20th spot, also about 4 points higher. Those two teams may represent a central idea abour Class A this year: if you want to compete at the top, you will need to really bring something extra in 2014. Whether a stronger challenge in NY will also push FM back on top at Portland remains to be seen, but the season for Class A is shaping up to be very very special. Last year saw many of the same elements of previous seasons for Class A: FM won the Class A and NXN-NY titles, FM and Saratoga were the top two teams and went to NXN Nationals, Megan Reilly repeated as States champ, and seven of the nine Sectional winners were the same. But there were also differences as Webster Thomas replaced Rush-Henrietta at the top of Section 5 and Valley Central ousted Warwick Valley in Section 9 and no NY Class A team came out on top at the Federation meet or out in Portland. This year will likely again feature much of the usual news we've grown accustomed to. FM looks to be pretty well loaded and includes a corps of younger runners who will probably make big leaps and once again push the Hornets to the top of the early national rankings. The Section 2 Class A battle will again get nasty as four teams in the state top 15 will be chasing Saratoga for the one slot at States, as Shenedehowa, Colonie, Shaker, and Guilderland all plan their separate uprising against the long reigning Blue Streak power. Sections 4, 5, and 9 also appear set to have exciting top level battles as Elmira squares off against a returning Corning, Webster Thomas faces Rush-Henrietta in Section 5, and Monroe-Woodbury and Warwick Valley tussle in Section 9 with an eye on reigning champ Valley Central. An extra bit of intrigue with the classification of Corning back to Class A is that a showdown of reigning States champs could occur at Canton if A-champ Megan Reilly and Corning sophomore Jessica Lawson head into the final K together. But Elmira's Abbey Wheeler, FM's Annika Avery, Rush Henrietta's Alex Cooper, and a bunch of other established and rising stars will be looking to come out on top at States and many of the other big invitationals and post season championships of 2014. No predictions of course, except that the action will be hot and the States meet in Canton will be cold. Really going out on a limb there. |
|||||
Fayetteville-Manlius's Annika Avery was well on her way to a victory at this point in the NXN-NY race as her team again claimed the regional title.

2013 and a one year stint down in Class B turned out to be an interesting time for Corning as it captured its first sectional title in 5 years and freshman Jessica Lawson joined the team and blew up all expectations by capturing a States and Federation championship and then running in the Footlocker Nationals meet. Lawson's place is now well-established after a superb track season, but the question of whether Corning can beat out Elmira for the S4-A title remains to be seen.

Webster Thomas was a surprise last year with two freshmen and a sophomore combining for a top-pack punch that carried the Titans to the S5-A title. Amanda Vestri, Claire Ashton, and Ellie Songer are all back to try for a second title, but with the loss of some key seniors, the Titans may need to add more depth and introduce some more fast freshmen to keep the rest of the S5-A teams at bay.

The Raiders did well taking 3rd in the always tough S2-A with a very young squad, and they have States runner Bellame Bower back. Kathryn Tenney was the top 7th grader in the state last year, and if she can continue to develop and Colonie can get a strong enough upward movement from the rest of the team, this group could be a serious threat to Saratoga.

Last year Shaker had two seniors on the varsity but it was mainly a very young team with mixed results that resulted in a 5th in the S2-A. But the top four runners should be back and there is a promising group of younger runners at the back of the pack, so if Maryanna Lansing can stay strong and push the Bison along, Shaker could be a big force in S2-A.

Warwick Valley has had Megan Reilly for the past two years running at the level of the top runners in the state and nation, and this year she will be aiming to pick up a third straight States title, among other things. But for the Wildcats to regain the S9-A crown, there will need to be some steady growth among the rest of the team members, which seems very likely on a young team with the top 5 back for 2014.
