2014 Season Overview for Class B
With 20 of the top 25 runners in the States B race last year either graduated or demoted to Class C for blue devilish behavior, you know likely there will be a whole lot of shaking going on in the group. One constant though is that reigning champ Pittsford Mendon will be among the top teams as it has enough of the top varsity back to again challenge for a title. Another focal poing for the B season is top returner Luke Gavigan of Tappan Zee, the only guy back from the top 11 at 2013's race at Queensbury, and he will be a huge favorite for this year's title following two 1600m States titles in indoor and outdoor track. Other than that, all is chaos.
Pittsford Mendon has a pack back, with Kevin Dooley, Griffin Hess, and Isaac Goodman all rated among the top 30 B Class returners in 2014, so the Vikings look like a team that could repeat, especially if anyone gets up to the level of last year's top 3 senior corps of Nathan Doyle, Connor Green, and Jack Wesley. Gavigan's Dutchmen appear to be the closest challenger to Pittsford Mendon as the team also features top 3 B returner Liam Burke, but Tappan Zee will need some development behind the top duo to pick up a third States title after winning its first 60 years ago. States titles are something the 3rd-rated team knows about, as Honeoye Falls-Lima will seeking its 5th, and a top trio of Matt Geraci, Coleman Roach and Jackson Tate gives the Cougars a good start. HFL's Section 5 mate Brighton also returns a strong top trio of Drew Schmitt, Mason Vodacek, and Jonah Simpson, so the battle out there for the S5-B crown should be spirited with three of the top four preseason favorites including Pittsford Mendon residing there.
The top picks behind TZ's Gavigan for the B title going into the season at this point would seem to be his teammate Liam Burke, Port Jervis's Kobie Lane, HFL's Matt Geraci, and Burnt Hills' Jared Short, but this is likely to be a season of new faces entering the scene, and another top contender, Jonah Allard of Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons, is still only entering his sophomore year.
The battle for 2nd at States was a thriller as winner TJ Hornberger watches Shoreham-Wading River's Ryan Udvadia edge Pearl River's Brian Cook.

Notes
1
Tappan Zee, Brewster, Pearl River, John Jay-Cross River
Tappan Zee looks to be the favorite for a third straight S1-B title, but the competition could be brutal with Brewster and Pearl River close behind and JJ-CR in strong development stage.
2
CBA Albany, Burnt Hills, Scotia Glenville, Averill Park
CBA Albany and Burnt Hills enter the season with similar ratings, but CBA may have a better pack if it can get some help at the back.
3
Jamesville-Dewitt, Whitesboro
Apparently this contest is for Jamesville-Dewitt and Whitesboro as we have been informed that Westhill will be classified as a C team..
4
Maine-Endwell, Vestal, Owego
With Corning back to its old haunts up in Class A, Maine-Endwell should be heavily favored with a team that returns four of last year's top six.
Section 5 Class B may have the deepest competition level of any of the boys' groups, and state champ Pittsford Mendon will have no easy task repelling the other claimants for the S5-B title this year.
6
Sweet Home, Hutchinson Tech, Starpoint
S6-B reigning champ Sweet Home should be one of the top 10 teams in the state and a large favorite for a repeat crown.
7
Peru
As always, Peru is the one and only.
8
Manhasset, Valley Stream North, Wantagh, Garden City
Manhasset has much of their varsity back and looks to be the best best to replace Wantagh as the S8-B champ.
9
Cornwall, Port Jervis, New Paltz
The S9-B battles have been close between the top three teams in recent years, and it would not be a huge surprise if either Cornwall or New Paltz unseat reigning champ Port Jervis this year.
10
Franklin, Ogdensburg
Franklin should have enough guys back from last year's team to again take the S10-B crown..
11
Bayport-Blue Point, Shoreham-Wading River
Reigning S11-B champ SWR lost three of its top four to graduation, and BBP has its top six back.

This Year's Outlook
The Vikings are missing their top 3 from their first state championship team last year, but the rest of the varsity returns, and in a year when no other powerhouse team is likely to emerge, PM looks ready to make a run at a second title. Kevin Dooley, Griffin Hess, Isaac Goodman, and Evan Feigel are back with TRs above the 160 mark, and that may be enough to fight off challenges from Honeoye Falls-Lima and Brighton for the S5-B crown.
Tappan Zee's Luke Gavigan finished 4th at States in 2013 and will be the favorite for the Class B crown this year.

This Year's Outlook
This will probably be Tappan Zee's best chance for a States title in the last ten years, and the leader is two-time States track champ Luke Gavigan who is the big favorite for an XC title in 2014. Backing him is one of the top 3 Class B runners in the state with Liam Burke, and if the Dutchmen can get some movement upward on the rest of the varsity, this could be their year.
Honeoye Falls Lima's Matt Geraci is chased by Cornwall's Michael Vecchio at States last year.

This Year's Outlook
The Cougars made big advances with a young team last year to finish 3rd in S5-B and get their top duo of Matt Greaci and Coleman Roach to States. Still relatively young but with a lot of experience, HFL could make a strong run at unseating state champ Pittsford Mendon for the sectional title.
Brighton's Will Ronchetti at right led Brighton last year and finished 13th at States.

Brightonwill be missing longtime top guy Will Ronchetti this year but the Barons still return a good amount of the varsity from last year's 2nd place team in S5-B. If Drew Schmitt, Mason Vodacek and Jonah Simpson can stay healthy, the team should be a big challenge to Pittsford Mendon and Honeoye Falls-Lima this year.

This Year's Outlook
The Indians are in a very tough sectional battle, but with States runner Liam Hackett and rising star Eion Nohilly back, JJ-CR could have a strong year if it can get some more help at the back of the lineup.
Maine-Endwell's Cody Brizzolara finished 6th at States in 2013 in his senior year.
States Individuals (Top 10 finishers): Keith Reester (1963, A-3rd), Duane Galbi (1981, B-4th) (1982, B-5th), Carl Anstrom (1990, B-5th), Cody Brizzolara (2013, B-6th)

This Year's Outlook
Now that Corning is back up with the big schools in Class A, Maine-Endwell's control of S4-B looks set to continue despite the loss of States medalist Cody Brizzolara. A relatively young team led by junior Dan Schaffer should continue to develop during the 2014 season.
Manhasset's Matthew Weilip (no. 827) represented the Indians at States last year.

This Year's Outlook
The Indians return much of last year's team and behind Thomas Fruhauf and William McNamara look to be the favorites to replace Wantagh as the champ in S8-B.
