Girls Glavin 3000m

State of the Action:  The Glavin races are the signature event of the Runnin Cadet Classic. Top athletes are invited to compete in what is a showdown between top distance and XC talent. After waiting through a long day in difficult weather, the spectators were not dissapointed. Both races were ignited by athletes from Corning who traveled up from Section 4 just for this event, and had spectacular finishes.

Katie Lembo, Jessica Lawson, and Alex Cooper were the top seeds coming into the event, and that's exactly how they finished. The three were at the front of the race from the start. The group was all together when Lembo decided to kick it up a notch surprisingly early, putting in a 75 second third lap. Lawson and Cooper were the only two able to keep Lembo in sight. Lembo steadily increased her lead as Lawson and Cooper fought to keep it under control. Heading into the gun lap Lembo had what appeared to be an insurmountable lead. But anyone who saw Lawson in action during indoor, most notably her win in the 3000m at states, would be very aware of her closing ability. Showing the composure of an athlete much older than a freshman, she never lost faith even as the gap grew, and into the final 300m turned on the jets. She fought all the way to the line, closing down the gap as Lembo was fading, but Lembo was able to hold on as Lawson leaned into the finish by 1 tenth of a second.

Showcasing the depth of their distance squad, Corning placed three athletes onto the podium.

Boys Glavin 3200m

State of the Action:  A very deep race, with 4 athletes all finishing under 10 minutes. Once the pack began to spread out after the early laps, it was Mickey Burke who led, but would later drop out. Josh Dyrland picked up from there, followed by three athletes from Corning (McCarthy, Chauvin, Mosher) and Hilton's Tyler Ranke. They came through 1600m in 4:42, but as Dyrland picked up the fast he soon created a gap and the field split. Dyrland led into the gun lap, followed by Ranke and Chauvin. McCarhty had faded behind the second group into 4th place, but put on a show as he threw down a sub-60 final lap. He blew by all the athletes and had a very impressive margin of victory at the finish.

Corning again established their depth, as just like the girls' race, Corning placed 3 boys on the podium.
