Claiming the best seat has its risks
Horseheads led the second race all the way to the final leg. Coming off a NY #4 performance in the 3,000m steeple last weekend, Corning’s John McCarthy blew the race apart with a 2:06 anchor leg to sweep the steeple relay for Corning.

Shuttle Hurdles:
An interference call with the Waverly team gave them a chance to rerun the race on their own, but the top times still came from the last heat.

Sprint Medley (400-200-200-800):
This race was decided on the final leg. Corning led into the final stretch, but it was Lauren Trumble who took the lead when it mattered most, fighting to the line to take the win in front of the home crowd for Ithaca.

The first of the short sprint relays was contested between Ithaca and Elmira, with Mande Semon and Jerry McPeak fighting for the right to stand on top of the podium. Semon was able to edge out McPeak to take the win, and these two would face off again later in the meet.

Distance Medley (1200-400-800-1600):
This race was all about Elmira as they lapped most of the field. Abbey Wheeler anchored the team in the 1600m, testing her legs for the 4x1600m later on. Elmira now sits NY #4, which is impressive considering the top 3 times all came from teams at Penn Relays.

Ithaca fans turned out in force and their team fed off of it for another close victory, this time over Corning. The Homer girls finished third, just losing contact with the two lead teams.

Horseheads led through this relay as well, and while they got their revenge on Corning after the steeple relay, they were unable to take the top spot. A strong finish from Vestal awarded their team a .3 second victory.

There is no lack of depth on the Corning distance squad. While resting athletes for the 4x1600m, they were still able to field a team strong enough to win the 4x800m. Vestal stole the sprint for second over Ithaca.

4x200m:
The worst of the weather held off for most of the meet, but resurfaced with tough wind and rain as the sprinters waited for the gun. Elmira weathered the storm strongest to take a narrow win.

After the first 2 legs, Ithaca had what appeared to be an insurmountable lead. A blistering 3rd leg from Ricky Houghtelling gave Jerry McPeak another chance to duel with Mande Semon. Semon and McPeak exited the final curve shoulder to shoulder, neither gaining any ground until the final 10m meters when McPeak was able to power ahead to earn the victory for Elmira and redemption for the 4x100m.

4x1600m:
No surprise that the two teams in contention were Corning and Elmira. Jessica Lawson ran an early leg for Corning and opened a gap that her teammates gradually extended. Abbey Wheeler anchored Elmira’s relay with a strong 5:06 after a busy day on the track, but it wasn’t enough as Corning held on to win in a new NY #1 time by 1.5 seconds. Elmira’s time now ranks them NY #3.
