2013-2014 Indoor Track Season Preview

MileSplit HQ - It is always an unusual time in the grand scheme of the sport.  Coaches are caught between those looking at Indoor track, and those who are moving on to post-season XC Meets.  Here at MileSplit, we have the same kind of dichotomy.  While our XC coverage is far from over, we know the sprinters and jumpers around the state are already looking at the rankings, seeing where they fit in, now that those former seniors are playing in the big leagues called college.  We thought we would help those interested athletes out, by ranking the state based on Indoor times set last year.  Again, like XC, it is an imperfect system, as it doesn't account for tremendous improvements some have made last Spring.   But it is a nice starting point.  Check them out below by clicking on the respective pictures.

Fresh Face: Jessica Lawson (Corning) has been hard to miss this past XC season, her debut, winning the Class B state title, as well as a Federation title.  While the beginning of her season will be delayed by the prospects of Foot Locker, look for her to excel on the track this winter.

One To Watch: New Rochelle's 4x200m knew they had to simply bide their time.  Record-setting Medgar Evers graduated key legs last year, while New Rochelle brings back the full squad to 2014.  Now the favorites, the girls from Section 1 can get down to chasing those state records themselves.

Record Chasers: Emma Gallagher (Garden City) has been inching her way closer to the national record for the 600m for two years now.  Will 2014 be the year?

Fresh Face: Peter Ryan (Fayetteville-Manlius) has had a breakout first XC season, and his first time on the track may be worth noting as well.

One To Watch: Chaminade and Syosset both lost only one senior from their stellar 4x800m relays last spring, and look to continue fighting to the line this winter.

Record Chasers: Jay Hebert of Ticonderoga had quite the competition last spring, from late season speedster John Stallworth.  Coming into Winter, Hebert looks to have a clear path in front of him, as he chases down some of the fastest times in the nation.
