State Qualifier Preview: Girls Contests Sec - All

Sectional Showdown: Girls Breakdown

State Qualifiers Spanning Tuesday, October 29 to Saturday, November 2, 2013

The most gripping five-day span of the New York XC season has arrived as teams battle for places at Queensbury in 82 races for the boys and girls that will each send 7 runners from a winning team and 5 additional at-large runners from other schools to the NY state championship. Teams and runners have been working through the summer and fall to get to States, and in this preview we will be highlighting the survivors who have battled their way to a spot on the starting lines for the state qualifiers. Most of the state's top runners will be in action in races that start on Tuesday up near Canada in Section 10 and end off on Saturday with the SQs for Sections 3, 5 and 8.

There are many agonizingly close contests at hand that will divest certain coaches of whatever remaining hair they have on their noggins, and there are also quite a few that we will need to work very hard to find even a smidgen of competitive fervor. We have tried to list at least two teams for each race, though for others up to 11 teams seem to deserve a mention. Runners will battle on courses up towering mountains (Bowdoin), through runner-eating quicksand pits and cardiac-arresting landslides (Sunken Meadows), around huge snow drifts (Salmon River), and dodging past speeding white spheroids (Elma Meadows) for the chance to blaze through the forested wilderness of Queensbury.

The Sectional Preview will be be releasing in four versions for both the boys and the girls to try to balance the need for timely information with the schedules of the earlier Sectionals such as Section 10 on Tuesday. Thankfully, this year there is no sign of Sandy or her sisters for the SQs, with ideal conditions predicted in most regions throughout the week. Cheers to everyone and congratulations to all the runners who earn a ticket to Queensbury.

The second update includes all sections except Saturday's  group of Sections 3, 5 and 8, which hopefully will be posted later on Thursday. The nine SQ meets that will be held on Friday and Saturday will be previewed in Thursday's release. A lot of races are about to be run that will end in almost a dead heat, and we are pointing out likely candidates with the help of a little hot pepper.

Summary:

Events have been exploding recently in S1-B as first Pearl River and then John Jay-Cross River went shooting upward. The Pirates finished 2nd in the Rockland County championship while the Indians were winning at Westchester, and now the question is how will the two teams fare in the race on Bowdoin's big hill. TR projected score has Pearl River with a 40-50 edge, but there may be still more development in store for both teams. The individual title projection has PR's Kelly Hayes in the lead, but Tappan Zee's Erin Jaskot is following in her footsteps.

Summary:

S2-A is just loaded with strong teams and top runners. Saratoga again stands out as the favorite, but Shenedehowa has been close enough to the Blue Streaks to cause some concern. Saratoga's big win at Suburban Council appears to have again widened the gap for a team with a lot of depth, and Shen will need to have Julia Zachgo back in the lineup to make a strong run for the title. Saratoga's Samantha Vetter made an incredible 23 TR leap upward to win the Suburban Council over Maryanna Lansing, and the two of them are the favorites for the individual title.

Summary:

Burnt Hills is incredibly deep with a dozen runners speeding at the 100+ TR mark, but the S2-B title will depend on who has the strength at the top of the lineup in addition to the big pack. After a 2nd place for BH at the Suburban Council meet, the S2-B battle of the two Spartans squads and the unnamed ones appears to be tipping towards Burnt Hills over Queensbury and Holy Names. After recent impressive runs, HN's Kaylee Scott and Lydia Williams, Queensbury's Megan Kellogg, and Burnt Hills' Eva Scoot all appear to be in the hunt for the individual crown.

Liverpool will likely be the S3-A representative at the Federation meet in two weeks. Laura Leff is the only non-Hornet likely to challenge for the individual crown here, with Annika Avery and Alana Pearl the favorites.

Summary:

The S5-A teams have already engaged in some great battles at McQuaid and Monroe County and elsewhere, but Monroe winner Penfield seems to have gotten the edge over Webster Thomas and reigning champ Rush-Henrietta with a recent surge. NY#1 Katie Lembo, Kennedy Jensen, Alex Cooper, and Autumn Albrecht are all ranked in the top 10 in the state, so the battle at the top should be a classic. Although there is a kind of sense of deja vu here following the Monroe County meet, this is definitely the highlight race of the SQs.

A few unknowns cloud the picture for the S9-A race, as two of Monroe-Woodbury's top two runners are not in the results since the breakout performance at Manhattan. MW did edge Warwick Valley in the OCIAA championship but had a lower TR average there. So this one is a coin-flip, another term for a race that goes to whoever wants it more. A fast developing Valley Central is also hanging close, and one of the members of the Borriello-Cavulluzzo top tandem was part of it last year, as Heidi replaces Holly C. 2012 state champion Megan Reilly is the top candidate for the individual title.
