New York State XC Rankings
Following Week of Saturday, September 21
Note: . Last weekend was the time when everything would fall into place for New York state XC rankings because by then every team would have run a competitive race, the Queensbury pre-States race would match many of the best teams in one big extravaganza event, and all remaining expectations based on 2012 could be finally discarded. But of course that didn't really happen, and we head into another big weekend with the McQuaid Invitational on tap and many questions about teams still unresolved. Briefly the major issues are: 1. Many teams including one reigning state champion and a number of other elite teams have not competed at all or with anything resembling a full squad. Teams that have run now have an advantage in the rankings. 2. To further muddy the trails, a number of western state teams at the GCC and Baldwinsville invites appeared from the results to be maybe running backwards and possibly doing flips in something known as the pre-McQuaid shake. The reasons for doing so are obvious, but it does complicate the matter of how to rank a team that went all out at GCC like McQuaid did, and the schools that are pointing toward the McQuaid Invite. 3. And then there was the Q effect, as almost every team that had run before the Queensbury meet saw their TR scores take a dive there. This is normal for a huge pre-States meet on courses like Queensbury, where lead runners and top teams run well but the mobs behind them get jammed up in tight turns in the woods and are slowed way down. The effect was much like running in mud, and I heard at least one scream fest between runners who didn't like the physical contact they were subjected to. The wind also became a much bigger factor in the afternoon and made the Division 3 race for the small schools much tougher. I've limited the comparisons of TRs between those of Queensbury with those of other meets to keep things fair, especially for the Class C and D schools. So if there are any questions or data corrections, please send them in. We are always looking for info that can be used to give the most accurate status of NY's teams. Class D rankings expands to 15 teams after some recent good showings by the teams down there. |

Perry's Pitch: | The battle at Queensbury came down to a tie-breaker between Liverpool and Saratoga, and the Warriors got the break to move into the 2nd spot in Class A prior to the big showdown with Fayetteville-Manlius at the McQuaid Invitational. Northport took 3rd place at the meet to get the 4th ranking, and North Rockland and Sachem North also moved up with strong performances at the Q. Elsewhere, Clarence, Warwick Valley, and McQuaid moved up with 1sts in their meets, and Ithaca also moved into the top 10 with a solid showing at Baldwinsville.
Kyle's Comments: | Queensbury was supposed to lead to the conclusion of the hotly contended debate for Class A superiority. But when Liverpool and Saratoga finished in a dead heat, it is hard to settle out the rankings. On the one hand, Liverpool won outright, based on the sixth man decision. On the other hand, Saratoga had the higher Speed Rating Average. And finally, how will Rush-Henrietta fit into this equation, after their start at McQuaid. A lot of interesting movement on the charts here. |

Perry's Pitch: | Pearl River ran up among the big teams at Queensbury and got a top 5 place behind winner Brian Cook to soar to the top of Class B. Burnt Hills excelled at Baldwinsville to take the second spot, and Port Jervis had a strong race at Warwick Valley to round out the top 3. Tappan Zee, Pittsford Mendon, and Corning all had solid showings in the Queensbury Championship race to remain in the top 10, and Brewster won the Division 2 race to move up to 11th place. Good battles in the McQuaid-AA race are anticipated.
Kyle's Comments: | It seems that Brian Cook has lifted his team to a new ranking single-handidly, but in reality the whole of Pearl River ran well. The race is tight behind them , as the averages are only seperated by a single point. Look for this to be the most close these teams may be all season. |

20 | Susquehanna Valley | 4 | 130.4 | 5th at Owego | Buchanan, Whitney |
Watching for... | Port Jefferson, Livonia, Greece-Olympia, Fonda-Fultonville, Newark Valley |
Perry's Pitch: | Results for Class C teams at Queensbury were diced up between three different races, but Bronxville, Pawling, and Jordan-Elbridge were a little stronger than the other teams under tough conditions. Adirondack won at New Hartford to take the lead position among States C teams, and Alden won at East Aurora to move into the next spot.
Kyle's Comments: | Collegiate looks good as usual, but teams looking at the State Meet need not worry about the AIS competitors. Meanwhile, Adirondack looks to have the most balanced team, with a healthy 3-point lead. |
Boys Class D | |||||

15 | Maple Grove | 6 | 125.2 | Inactive | Wefing, Zuroski |
Watching for... | Oakfield-Alabama, Sherman, Onondaga, Tully |
Perry's Pitch: | Barker, Greenwich without Jeremy Spezio, and Sauquoit Valley took the top three places in the Queensbury-3 race as the Class D teams did themselves proud. New York Mills looked good in winning the Queensbury-1 race, and Wheatland-Chili won at GCC. With States reigning champ Mount Academy still inactive, the top of the D leaderboard looks a bit disjointed, but there will be changes soon.
Kyle's Comments: | Mount Academy was scheduled to run at Warwick, but the questions remained unanswered as they did not compete. Meanwhile, Barker capitilized on Jeremy Spezio's non-compete to overcome Greenwich, but look for the rankings to settle down once he returns. |
