New York State Girls XC Rankings Week 2

New York State XC Rankings

Following Week of Saturday, September 21

Note:  Last weekend was the time when everything would fall into place for New York state XC rankings because by then every team would have run a competitive race, the Queensbury pre-States meet would match many of the best teams in one big extravaganza event, and all remaining expectations based on 2012 could be finally discarded. But of course that didn't really happen, and we head into another big weekend with the McQuaid Invitational on tap and many questions about teams still unresolved. Briefly the major issues are:

1. Some teams have not competed at all or finished 5 runners at a meet. Teams that have run now have an advantage in the rankings.

2. The girls seemed to have suffered mightily from the Q effect, as almost every team that had run before the Queensbury meet saw their TR scores take a steep dive there. Six of the Section 2-A teams that ran in the Mega Dual meet at Saratoga Park on the Tuesday before were subjected to an average -12 TR score drop at the pre-States meet. This is normal for a huge pre-States meet on courses like Queensbury, where lead runners and top teams run well but the mobs behind them get jammed up in tight turns in the woods and are slowed way down. The effect was much like running in mud, and the girls especially were bothered by the jostling in the woods. The wind also became a much bigger factor in the afternoon and made the Division 3 race for the small schools much tougher. I've limited the comparisons of TRs between those of Queensbury with the ones of other meets to keep things fair, especially for the Class C and D schools. For the six aforementioned S2-A teams including Saratoga, I have listed first their S2 Mega-Dual and then their Queensbury race TRs to help compare the results there to other, more standard, meets.

So if there are any questions or data corrections, please send them in. We are always looking for info that can be used to give the most accurate status of NY's teams. Class D rankings expands to 15 teams after some recent good showings by the teams down there.

Perry's Pitch:      It was a tough day in the crowds for many teams at Queensbury, but Saratoga broke to the top for the championship behind new front runner Peyton Engborg and laid further claim to the 2nd spot behind top sitting FM. Shenendehowa and Elmira earned the 4th and 5th places in the championship race to move way up in the rankings, and Monroe-Woodbury entered the scene with a win in the Queensbury-2 race. Suffern had a big day at its home meet to move into the 3rd spot, and Penfield prepped for a big day at next weekend's McQuaid meet by taking a win at GCC Cougar, as Rush-Henrietta stayed close behind in 2nd to earn the 9th ranking. Clarence rounded out the top 10 after a win at Baldwinsville without last year's recovering all-star Marissa Saenger..

Kyle's Comments:      What once we thought would bring clarity, may had muddled the waters even further.  Speed Ratings for the Queensbury left a lot of questions out there, as on the whole they seemed lower than average.  It is tough to weigh them against performances elsewhere.  That said, Suffern had an outstanding day on the new course at Bear Mountain.    Elmira's great showing at Queensbury also bumped them up a large amount.

Perry's Pitch:      Injuries and missing runners have taken their toll at the top of Class B, and this promises to be a season of many changes. East Aurora displayed a wealth of young new talent and posted the best TR score to head to the top of the rankings. New classmate Corning had a fantastic day in the Queensbury Championship as frontrunner Jessica Lawson and her team both scored 2nd places to move into 2nd in the rankings. Queensbury's Spartans continued their standard heroics to take 3rd in the Championship race and take 3rd in the standings. Miller Place and Sweet Home both ran strong races in the Championship, and a shorthanded Holy Names squad fell in behind. Section 1 schools John Jay-Cross River, Pearl River, and Nanuet jousted for position with 1st places at their meets, and North Shore and Honeoye Falls-Lima also pulled down wins.

Kyle's Comments:      Queensbury proved the difference a new face could make,  both in Saratoga's squad, and that of Corning.  They get a huge bump after an impressive second place finish, and it will be interesting to see them face off against East Aurora in the McQuaid merge.  Another big mover is Queensbury, who capitilized on their home course to run very well.  Preseason Holy Names may be down a bit in the rankings, but they are not out.  Expect them to jump back up once they get their full squad back up and running.

Watching for... Fonda-Fultonville, Friends Academy, Fredonia, Adirondack, Catskill, Schalmont, Irvington, Newfane
Perry's Pitch:      Bronxville had another impressive victory over the bigger teams at Warwick, but suddenly Skaneateles has started to make the competition interesting after besting a fast-developing 3rd-ranked Cazenovia and 6th ranked Marcellus at Baldwinsville. Wayland-Cohocton held its own while running with the top state teams in the Queensbury Championship race for the 4th ranking, and Dobbs Ferry leaped to 5th after running 2nd to North Shore in the Queensbury-3 race, while Broadalbin-Perth and Akron took the 3rd and 4th places in the race.

Kyle's Comments:      Skaneatels is closing the gap that once was thought unsurmoutable behind defending state champs' Bronxville.  While the Bronco's are the clear favorite still, the upstate squad led by Kaitlin Neal is improving every weekend.

15 Sherman 6 46.2 Inactive Eliason, King, Pacy
Watching for... Geneseo, Maple Hill
Perry's Pitch:      Class D looks like it will be a whirlwind of change at the top this year. Tully would almost certainly have bested a Maple Grove team running without Caroline Benson if the two teams had been in the same race at Queensbury. But the Black Knights took the victory in the small Division 1 race, while the Red Dragons ran in the huge Championship race among the top teams and still holds on to an overall TR margin at the top. Seton Catholic took the 2nd spot behind Tully in the Queensbury-1 race, while Beaver River edged out Greenwich for 5th in the Queensbury-3 race to grab the 4th ranking. Five new spots in the rankings, and Byron-Bergen moved into the top 10 with a win at GCC.

Kyle's Comments:      Tully looked very, very good at Queensbury in the smaller school race, and will compete quite closely at the state meet.  That is, however, if they can beat a quite close Beaver River to make it out of their section.  It is not an easy road.
