2012 Season Summary for Class B
With a memorable squad of mostly seniors, Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons took the lead in Class B from the start of the season and held the reins through to the end, winning at States by a comfortable 21 points over East Aurora and 26 over Pittsford Mendon. Franklin Academy edged out Tappan Zee for the 4th spot by a point. ND-BG packed Jordan Pantalone, 8th grader Jonah Allard, and Jason Lange into the States medalist group, and that strength at the top was too much for any other team to match.
After finishing 2nd in 2011 to Peru's Dan Lennon, Marcellus's Ryan Manahan was ready to take his turn on the throne in 2013, and he fought off Lake Shore's TJ Hornberger by five seconds, taking his school's second B individual title in 5 years following up on Chris Stogsdill's triumph in 2008. A ways behind Hornberger in 2nd was his fellow junior Brian Cook of Pearl River, which may be the announcement for 2013's duel at the top.
2013 Season Overview for Class B
The graduation losses for the top four teams in the States B ranged from almost total (6 of 7 for champ Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) to really major (top 4 guys for Franklin) to gigantic (top 3 for East Aurora) to tough (2 of top 4 for Pittsford Mendon). East Aurora always seems to be regenerating itself on the fly, and Pittsford Mendon has enough returning strength to be among the top three rated Class B teams entering 2013, but the way has been cleared for more intact teams to take a run at the States title. Two of the top 3 are from Section 9, as returning sectional champ Port Jervis has its entire varsity back including States medalist Kobie Lane, and a Cornwall team that got edged by 4 points at sectionals last year has 6 of 7 guys back and are led by 30th place States finisher Mike Vecchio. Other teams expected to be starting off high in the ratings are a Burnt Hills squad led by States finalists John Rabideau and Patrick McGuinness, a Pearl River squad led by States title hopeful Brian Cook, a Tappan Zee team that has States medalist Luke Gavigan hoping to move his team up from last year's 5th place States finish, and a Shoreham-Wading River team led by States 9th-place finisher Ryan Udvadia.
Two guys who are expected to be battling for the States B title this year are Lake Shore's TJ Hornberger, runner-up in 2012 and the 2nd place finisher in the States indoor 1600m, and Pearl River's Brian Cook, third at States last year and 3rd in States outdoor 3000m steeplechase. Two other runners who appear to be the biggest threats to the top duo are Pittsford Mendon frontrunner and 2012 7th place States finisher Jack Wesley and Shoreham-Wading River's Ryan Udvadia who got 9th last year.

Notes
1
Pearl River, Tappan Zee, Brewster, Nanuet
The question will be who has the most depth in a likely very close contest between Pearl River and reigning champ Tappan Zee.
2
Burnt Hills
Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons took the state title but lost six varsity guys to graduation, and all of the other S2-B teams were also hit hard except Burnt Hills.
3
Westhill-Bishop Ludden, Jamesville-Dewitt
The S3-B contest last year was a nail-biter, but after Jamesville-Dewitt lost its top three to graduation, reigning champ Westhill-BL looks good to go.
4
Maine-Endwell, Owego, Vestal
Maine-Endwell is favored for a fourth straight title, but Owego has a full squad back and Vestal also may have closed the gap a bit.
Pittsford Mendon returns one of the top 3 squads for the the states B battle, but there are a solid group of teams in S5-B sitting a little ways back.
6
Lake Shore, Sweet Home, East Aurora,
Two evenly matched preseason teams with Sweet Home and East Aurora face a Lake Shore team that needs one more strong runner to become a major power.
7
Peru
Peru is the one and only.
8
North Shore, Wantagh, Garden City
North Shore had the fewest graduation losses and has a marginally stronger team than the rest of S8-B at the outset.
9
Port Jervis, Cornwall, New Paltz
Port Jervis and Cornwall enter the season rated in the top three for NY, so you know that the S9-B battle should be a great one.
10
Franklin, Ogdensburg
Franklin was hit very hard by graduation losses, but the Huskies should still have enough to win 10-B easily.
11
Shoreham-Wading River, Bayport-Blue Point
Two teams that appeared to be deed even going into the state qualifiers last year never did get to battle in the wake of Sandy, and this year SWR appears to be the team driving the bus.

This Year's Outlook
Last year the Raiders made their first trip to States in 39 years. Now with a full and strong cast back for 2013, Port Jervis has moved to the top rated position in States B ahead of the six heavily depleted that finished ahead of it at Elma Meadows. States medalist Kobie Lane and Hans Zanger lead a deep team that should battle Cornwall in S9-B for a chance for a States title bid.
Pittsford Mendon's Jack Wesley pursues Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons' Jordan Pantalone at left, and on.right Matt VanVleck leads a pack charging for the finish.

This Year's Outlook
The Vikings appear to have a sizeable advantage over their main pursuers in S5-B with a deep squad that includes States medalist Jack Wesley in front. The McQuaid-AA race should again show how good the team is in a year that may offer PM its best shot ever at a States title.

This Year's Outlook
Cornwall enters the season rated a tad behind Port Jervis in the battle for the S9-B title, but a balanced and deep veteran squad running behind Michael Vecchio and Aidan Doyle should again make the sectionals contest a very good one. The States title is also very much in play here.

This Year's Outlook
John Rabideau and Patrick McGuinness provide strong senior leadership for a team that had a four year run of sectional titles interrupted by Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons last year. The Spartans should reclaim the S2-B crown, and with some development at the back the team could be States title contenders.

This Year's Outlook
The Pirates look to be in another close battle with Tappan Zee for the S1-B title, but with Brian Cook and Ben McDermott at the top and a decently strong team behind the lead guys, Pearl River may have a bit of an edge early on. Cook should once again challenge for the States title.

This Year's Outlook
Coming off its first sectional title in 8 years, Tappan Zee is in decent shape for another showdown with Pearl River for the S9-B. The junior duo of Luke Gavigan and Liam Burke coupled with senior Pat Flanagan gives the Dutchmen a great top core for the 2013 campaign.

This Year's Outlook
Lake Shore is potentially a very dangerous team, as the Eagles have the highest rated top four in Class B. But XC needs 5 guys, and unless the team can come up with some depth in the 5-6 spots, they will again be looking at a sectional place similar to the 9th spot they got in 2012. TJ Hornberger is the favorite for the States title, and Calvin Butlak and Ian Yargeau provide a lot more oomph at the top.

This Year's Outlook
The Panthers are in an interesting three-way battle with East Aurora and Lake Shore that could give them their best shot for a title in 13 years. Mitchell Daddario and Matthew Ciminella give the team a good top duo that will need some back end development to overcome a rebuilding East Aurora team.
East Aurora seniors Gene Baritot and Brendan Keany were the top Blue Devils at States last year. Chasing Baritot is Nyacks Ahmed Ahmed.

This Year's Outlook
With the top 3 from last year's States runner-up team gone and only two sophomore returners from last year's varsity, East Aurora is extremely young and will be depending on a fast rebuilding program to keep alive its 6-year run on sectional titles. Matt McLaughlin and Kenny Vassbinder will lead a team that you can never really count out.

A classic showdown with Shoreham-Wading River for the S11-B title was swept away by Hurricane Sandy, and with the loss of the top 4 to graduation, the Phantoms start off 2013 running a long ways behind SWR. The team will need a big jump from the returning group to have a chance at catching the Wildcats.
