NYU senior Matt Turlip ran 3:45.76 for 1500-meters at the Last Chance meet at Swarthmore on Saturday(May 14) to break the 44-year old school record of 3:46.6, which was set by Byron Dyce at the 1967 Pan-American Games in Winnipeg, Canada(Dyce was 5th).
The NYU men’s cross country team – national Div. III champions a few years ago and fourth last year – are ranked fifth nationally in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason poll. Coach Nick McDonough’s Violets are led by Sebastian Schwelm and Matt Turlip, both of whom finished in the top 40 in last year’s championship race. NYU has won its UAA conference championship each of the last four seasons.
Five members of the NYU track team – four distance runners and a quartermiler – are headed to the NCAA Division III championships, to be held beginning Thursday at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.

Iona, Syracuse, Plattsburgh, Cortland, NYU, Geneseo, St. Lawrence, and Stonybrook are all heading to nationals in Indiana. Nicole Blood and Lindsey Sherf, former New Yorker's, will also be racing for Oregon.
Nick McDonough started as men’s head coach at New York University in 1998 and was named head women’s cross country and track coach in spring 2008. Last week he guided NYU’s men’s team to its three consecutive University Athletic Association championship
NYU lost most of its Div. III national-championship team to graduation, so Nick McDonough’s 2008 squad was barely on the radar screen. As the cross country season reached its halfway point, this year’s young Violets were ranked 26th nationally.
