Papazov won the men's hammer throw Championship of America, becoming the first individual Penn Relays champion in program history. His victory was the first by Manhattan in any event at the Penn Relays since 1957, when the 4 x 800 yard and 4 x mile relay squads both won gold.

Manhattan College's Albert Johnson III (Painted Post, N.Y.) finished fifth in the men's long jump Championship of America at the 118th Penn Relays from historic Franklin Field on Friday. Johnson leaped 7.58 meters (24 feet, 10½ inches) to notch his second career Penn Relays top-five finish. He placed third in the event in 2010.

Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) set a Manhattan College and Irish under-23 national record in the men's pole vault on Thursday. The Jaspers went 1-3-5 in the event, as Ashley Bowman (Elmont, N.Y.) placed third in a time of 25.52 seconds and Ieva Vitola (Jekabpils, Latvia) was fifth in 25.92 seconds.

In just her second meet as a Jasper, Karolin Wagner (Ribbesbuettel, Germany) earned a place in the Manhattan College indoor track & field record book on Friday afternoon at Draddy Gymnasium. She cleared 3.71 meters (12 feet, two inches) to break Jenna Daly's six-year old school record in the women's pole vault by one centimeter. Her performance was the highlight of day one at the Brother Jasper Invitational.

While most of the Manhattan College men's and women's indoor track & field teams kicked off the 2011 indoor campaign at Thursday's Manhattan College Opener, a few Jaspers waited until Saturday to begin the season. The wait was well worth it, as Cara Rostant (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and Heidy Palacios (Yonkers, N.Y.) posted ECAC-qualifying times at the Yale Season Opener at Coxe Cage.

The indoor track at Draddy Gymnasium was replaced with a state-of-the-art Mondo surface over the summer. On Thursday afternoon, the Manhattan College men's and women's track & field teams got a chance to formally compete on the new surface for the first time when they hosted the annual Manhattan College Opener.

The Manhattan College men's cross country team concluded its 2011 season by competing in the annual IC4A Championships at Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday morning. Led by Zack Price's (Warwick, N.Y.) 27th-place finish, the Jaspers took sixth out of 16 teams in the University Division.

Epsilon Sigma Pi, Manhattan College's oldest college-wide honor society, held its induction ceremony on Sunday during the Fall Honors Convocation at the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers. Eight senior student-athletes became members of Epsilon Sigma Pi during the convocation.

Manhattan College's Billy Wilkens (Kenmore, Wash.) and Maria Jangsten (Gothenburg, Sweden) have been named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men's and Women's Cross Country Runners of the Week for their performances at Friday afternoon's Metropolitan Championships. Wilkens placed 35th overall to lead the men's team, while Jangsten took 32nd in the women's race.

Championship season got underway for the Manhattan College men's and women's cross country teams on Friday afternoon, as the Jaspers gathered in Van Cortlandt Park with other schools from the New York City area for the annual Metropolitan Championships. And the Jaspers were up to the challenge of championship competition. The Manhattan men finished fifth overall, while the women's squad secured seventh place.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, the new indoor track surface in Draddy Gymnasium was formally rededicated in honor of Joseph P. Kearney '67. Many of Kearney's family members and teammates were on hand for the brief ceremony, which was a part of the Manhattan College Track & Field Reunion.

On Friday afternoon, the Manhattan College men's and women's cross country teams competed at one of the largest annual meets in the Northeast, the Brooks Paul Short Run at Lehigh University. Running against an elite field, both squads performed well. The Manhattan men secured 36th place in the "Brown" race, while the women's team was 39th in the "Brown" race.

Immediately upon returning from Daegu, South Korea, where she represented her native Guyana at the 2011 World Championships, former Manhattan College track & field star Aliann Pompey embarked on a new role as the Armory College Prep program's Director of Educational Development. The program was founded by 1996 Olympic gold medalist Derrick Adkins and is run out of the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory in Manhattan.

The new indoor track in Draddy Gymnasium will be rededicated in honor of the late Joseph Kearney '67 as a part of the Manhattan College Track & Field Reunion on Saturday, Oct. 1. Members of the Kearney family will participate in the rededication ceremony, which is scheduled to take place at 4 p.m.

The Iona Meet of Champions is traditionally the first early-season test for the Manhattan College men's and women's cross country teams. That was certainly again the case on Saturday morning, as the Jaspers ran against some of the top squads in the Northeast at Van Cortlandt Park. Overall, the Manhattan women finished 15th in the team standings, while the men's squad placed 16th.

Starting on Thursday, Sept. 15, the Manhattan College track & field team will be holding a shoe and clothing drive to benefit the Salvation Army. The drive will continue until Saturday, Oct. 15.

After two weeks of nothing but training runs, the Manhattan College men's and women's cross country teams finally got to face some outside competition at the season-opening Army Open on Friday. Both freshman-laden squads performed well, with the men and women both taking second in the unofficial team scoring over the five-kilometer course at the West Point Golf Course.

Milan Jotanovic, a five-time All-American at Manhattan College, represented his native Serbia in the shot put competition at the 2011 IAAF World Championships at Daegu Stadium on Thursday morning. Jotanovic was unable to advance out of the qualifying round, posting a best mark of 18.39 meters (60 feet, four inches).

Representing her native Guyana, former Manhattan College track & field star Aliann Pompey was in action on Saturday at the IAAF World Championships from Daegu Stadium. Pompey competed in the women's 400 meters, but didn't advance out of the first round. Her time of 53.59 seconds was good for fifth place in her heat. However, only the top four finishers in each heat moved on to Sunday's semifinals.

Pompey, the 2000 NCAA indoor champion in the event, is representing her native Guyana at the World Championships, which are being held in Daegu, South Korea.

At the Swedish National Championships over the weekend, former Manhattan College athletes Malin Marmbrandt and Malin Olsson both competed in the women's long jump. Marmbrandt placed fourth with a jump of 6.25 meters (20 feet, six inches), while Olsson was sixth with a leap of 6.10 m (20'0).

The day after the Manhattan College men's track & field team was recognized for its academic success by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the Jasper women received the same honor. Manhattan was one of 164 institutions to earn Division I All-Academic Women's Track & Field Team status.

As part of Manhattan College's new marketing and promotional campaign entitled The Promise, the College is introducing its newly enhanced primary athletic logos this month. The traditional Block M logo was revamped, but still retains a vintage look, which has been a mainstay throughout the athletic program's rich history. Additionally, both a ‘Manhattan' and a ‘Jaspers' word mark were created to complement the Block M logo.

Manhattan College's Malin Olsson (Malmo, Sweden) has been selected to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I All-Academic women's track & field team for the 2010-11 season. She is one of a record 663 student-athletes from 172 institutions to receive the honors.

Head Coach Dan Mecca has announced the Manhattan College track & field/cross country team's 2011-12 recruiting class. A total of 33 newcomers (17 men, 16 women) will join the track & field squad next season, and 14 of those athletes (seven men, seven women) will also run cross country for the Jaspers.

Former Manhattan College star Aliann Pompey took the gold medal in the women's 400 meters at the USATF National Club Track & Field Championships at Icahn Stadium on Saturday. Representing the Shore Athletic Club, Pompey crossed the line in 51.66 seconds, her best time of the year and just shy of her own meet record.

Joe Ryan, an assistant coach for the Manhattan College track & field team has been named head coach of the Guyanese National Team for the upcoming World Championships in Daegu, South Korea. Ryan served in the same capacity at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Senior Jackie Hargrove (Vienna, Va.) of the Manhattan College women's track & field team has been nominated by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award, which recognizes graduating female student-athletes for their achievements in service, leadership, athletics and academics. Hargrove and Siena soccer player Tabitha Tice were the conference's two nominees.

Fresh off a 15th-place showing at the NCAA Championships, Manhattan College All-American discus thrower Colin Quirke (Los Gatos, Calif.) was back in action at the European Team Championships 1st League on Sunday. Representing Ireland in the continental team competition, Quirke finished 11th in the discus with a toss of 52.05 meters (170 feet, 9¼ inches).

Junior Colin Quirke (Los Gatos, Calif.) of the Manhattan College men's track & field has been awarded Second Team All-America honors by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Quirke placed 15th in the discus throw at last weekend's NCAA Championships at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships got underway at Drake University's Drake Stadium on Wednesday night, and Manhattan College junior Colin Quirke (Los Gatos, Calif.) was in action in the final of the men's discus throw. Quirke finished 15th out of 24 competitors in the event with a toss of 53.62 meters (175 feet, 11 inches).

Former Manhattan College track & field captain Joe Schatzle '53, who still holds three school records and was inducted into the College's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991, passed away on Saturday after a long illness. He was 79.

The Capital One Academic All-District men's and women's track & field/cross country teams were announced on Thursday, and three Manhattan College student-athletes were recognized for their work in the classroom. NCAA East Regional Outdoor Track & Field Championships got underway at Indiana University's Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex on Thursday afternoon, and Manhattan College's Malin Olsson (Malmo, Sweden) competed in the women's long jump.

The first round of the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the East Regional, will be held this weekend at Indiana University's Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex. Two Manhattan College athletes have qualified for the competition. Malin Olsson (Malmo, Sweden) will compete in the women's long jump, while Colin Quirke (Los Gatos, Calif.) qualified in the men's discus. Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) also qualified in the men's pole vault, but will not compete due to injury.

A day after taking fourth in the discus throw, Colin Quirke (Los Gatos, Calif.) of the Manhattan College men's track & field team secured fifth place in the shot put at the IC4A Outdoor Championships from Princeton University's Weaver Stadium on Sunday afternoon. One of three Jaspers competing in the event, Quirke collected four team points with a toss of 16.37 meters (53 feet, 8½ inches).

The meet was highlighted by a pair of first-place finishes on the women's side. Manhattan College's outdoor track & field season officially got underway on Friday and Saturday, as the Jaspers made their annual trip to Arizona for the Baldy Castillo Invitational at Arizona State's Sun Angel Stadium. The meet was highlighted by seven ECAC/IC4A qualifying performances, including two each by Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany) and Colin Quirke (Los Gatos, Calif.).

Felix Siljeback-Larsen (Vasteras, Sweden) of the Manhattan College men's track & field team captured the silver medal in the heptathlon at the IC4A Championships from Boston University's Track & Tennis Center on Sunday. Siljeback-Larsen, whose personal-record score of 5402 points was the third best total in school history, finished just 61 points out of first.

At the IC4A Indoor Track & Field Championships at Boston University's Track & Tennis Center on Saturday, Manhattan College's Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) set a new school record of 5.15 meters (16 feet, 10¾ inches) to win the gold medal in the pole vault. With the jump, which was also a new Irish national indoor record, McGovern continued a streak of 25 consecutive years in which at least one Manhattan athlete has won an IC4A Championship.

At the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships from the Albuquerque Convention Center on Saturday, former Manhattan College track & field star Jake Freeman won the weight throw competition to capture his second career national title. Freeman is the reigning National Champion outdoors in the hammer throw.

With the ECAC/IC4A Championships just a week away, this weekend marked the last chance for athletes to post qualifying marks. Mikael Rojeras (Sala, Sweden) of the Manhattan College men's track & field team did just that on Friday night, posting a time of 2:25.94 in the 1000 meters at the Armory Collegiate Challenge from the Armory Track & Field Center. Running the event for the first time, Rojeras captured second place.

The Manhattan College men's track & field team has never lost the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) indoor title. And despite coming into the meet as underdogs, the Jaspers weren't about to let that change this year. Manhattan posted a narrow 141-136 victory over Rider at the Armory Track & Field Center on Friday night to win its 15th consecutive MAAC indoor championship. The Manhattan women's team finished second, 13 points behind MAAC champion Saint Peter's.

Malin Olsson (Malmo, Sweden) of the Manhattan College women's track & field team had quite an afternoon at Draddy Gymnasium on Wednesday. On her fifth effort in the long jump competition, Olsson broke her own school record with a leap of 6.14 meters (20 feet, 1½ inches), becoming the first Manhattan woman ever to jump 20 feet indoors. Then on her final attempt, Olsson shattered that mark, jumping 6.24 m (20'5¾). Her record leap was the highlight of the Manhattan College Invitational, the Jaspers' annual tri-meet with Fordham and Southern Connecticut State.

Cara Rostant (Valley Stream, N.Y.) had a pair of first-place finishes to lead the Manhattan College track & field team at the Giegengack Invitational at Yale University's Coxe Cage on Saturday. Rostant won the 200 meters in a personal-best and ECAC-qualifying time of 24.88 seconds. She also ran the anchor leg on Manhattan's victorious 4 x 400 meter relay squad.

Thursday, Feb. 3 marks the 50th anniversary of the Manhattan College track & field team setting a world record in the two-mile relay. The squad of John Corry (1:55.1), Kyle Courtney (1:54.2), Larry St. Clair (1:51.8) and Artie Evans (1:51.7) posted a time of 7:32.8 to win the gold medal at the 1961 Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden. They broke the 19-year-old world record, which had been held by Seton Hall, by just over one second.

Five Manhattan College men and four women earned gold medals at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships from the Armory Track & Field Center on Saturday. Overall, Manhattan finished third in the team competition on both the men's and women's side.

The Metropolitan Indoor Track & Field Championships got underway with the weight throw and multi-event competitions at Draddy Gymnasium on Friday. Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany) and Kristi Krull (Tallin, Estonia) captured bronze medals on Friday, while Felix Siljeback-Larsen (Vasteras, Sweden) was in the lead after day one of the heptathlon.
