Longtime assistant coach Artie Smith '96 was also promoted to full-time on the staff and will have the primary responsibility for coaching the cross country team and distance runners after splitting time working with the track program and as assistant Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences the past four years.

  • Women's Track Closes Indoor Season With Second Place At ECAC Championships

    BOSTON, Mass. -- The Cornell women's track team placed second at the 81-school ECAC Championships in Boston this weekend, scoring 52 points to become the first Ivy League women's team to place in the top two at the Indoor ECAC Championships in the meet's 35 year history. The women had 10 scoring performances and were led by junior Janel Parker, who claimed two ECAC titles as she anchored the DMR (closing out the race after great legs from senior Kim Standridge, junior Kelsey Reimnitz and junior Molly Glantz) and also placed first in the 1000 an hour later.

    NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's track team had a busy weekend in New York City, with competitive relay performances at the Millrose Games on Friday evening and a second place team finish at the New York Road Runners “College Night at the Armory” on Saturday. The men's meet on Saturday was tightly contested, with Princeton taking the team title over the Big Red in a twelve-team field by finishing strongly in the final two events of the evening, scorring 149 points to Cornell's 144 1/3.     MADISON, Conn. -- On a very fast course overlooking the Connecticut coast, the Big Red men placed 6th out of 38 teams at the NCAA Northeast Regional meet in unseasonably warm conditions at Hammonasset State Park in Madison, Conn. Syracuse won the team title with 56 points, followed by Iona (63), Providence (113), Dartmouth (138), and Columbia (146). Cornell (232 points) defeated Heps rivals Brown (8th place), Yale (11th), and Harvard (12th) to improve on last year's 7th place finish and 235 point total (Princeton and Pennsylvania compete in the Mid-Atlantic Region). Iona's Leonard Korir won the race in 29:36.9 over a field of 229 runners.

  • Bilyk Retires After 27 Years With Cornell Track and Field

    ITHACA, N.Y. -- After over 30 years of college coaching, including 27 years as the mentor for the Big Red men's and women's throwers, Mark Bilyk has retired from coaching this summer. For the past two seasons, Bilyk has also balanced his duties as the head equipment manager for the Cornell Athletic Department, a position he moved into full-time on July 1.

    ITHACA, N.Y. -- Tom Gage '65, a member of the Cornell Athletics Hall of Fame, passed away on Thursday at his home in Billings, Mont. Gage was inducted into the Cornell Hall of Fame in 1988 and competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. He was 67.

  • Cornell and Penn Defeat Oxford and Cambridge In Historic Series

    OXFORD, England -- The Big Red track and field team's 2010 Tour of the United Kingdom came upon its final stages on Tuesday as the Transatlantic Series between teams from Cornell and Penn and teams from Oxford and Cambridge was renewed at the historic Iffley Road Track at Oxford. The Series, which for Cornell dates to 1921 (and 1951 for Penn), returned to Iffley Road, the site of the first ever sub-four minute mile run by Roger Bannister in 1954, for the first time since 2002, and the match was contested under warm and sunny skies. The Cornell and Penn women remain unbeaten in the Series, winning 18 of 19 events to defeat Oxford and Cambridge, 125-64, while men were also triumphant, claiming 16 of 19 events to win 118-76.

    BIRMINGHAM, England -- The Cornell track teams had a terrific four days in Birmingham, and the track team there were wonderful hosts. The athletes on the Cornell and Penn teams stayed with their counterparts from Birmingham and continued the long tradition of forging Trans-Atlantic friendships on these tours.     ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Big Red women's track team continued its fine 2010 campaign in hosting the Kane Invitational in Barton Hall on Friday and Saturday, a large meet that included 24 teams and over 1300 athletes, as well as 55 men's and women's multi-eventers. The weekend was a success, as the Cornell women produced 13 event wins and 6 ECAC qualifiers, to go along with a freshman record and 4 new additions to the all-time top-10 lists.

  • Men's Track Garners 22 IC4A Berths At Kane Invitational

    ITHACA, N.Y. -- It was a busy and productive weekend for the Cornell men's track team, as the Big Red hosted the 24-team Kane Invitational in Barton Hall on Friday and Saturday, an event that featured over 50 multi-eventers and 1300 athletes overall. In addition, a contingent of men's middle distance and distance runners competed at the Armory's "College Saturday" series on Saturday evening. The weekend was a success, as the men produced 22 IC4A qualifiers, an NCAA provisional qualifier, a new school and freshman record and seven alterations to the all-time top 10 lists.

    STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Cornell men's track and field team had solid performances across the board and finished third out of twelve teams at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup, held on Friday and Saturday at Penn State. The Big Red produced an event win and four second place finishes, had 13 IC4A qualifiers and also had four changes to the all-time top 10 lists in scoring 80 points, placing behind Princeton (107) and Penn State (83).

  • Women's Track Finishes Third At Sykes-Sabock Challenge

    STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Cornell women' s track and field team competed very well on Friday and Saturday at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup at Penn State, earning a third place finish in the competitive fourteen team field. The women won two events and had two runner-up showings, produced 11 ECAC qualifiers and had four alterations to the all-time top-10 lists, including a freshman record. The Big Red tallied 78 points to finish only behind host Penn State (134) and SEC power Auburn (111).

    NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Big Red men's track and field teams competed in New York City this weekend at two different venues and had terrific results. After the men's 4X800 finished fourth at the Millrose Games on Friday night, the full team competed at the New York Road Runners' "College Saturday Night at the Armory" on Saturday evening, a scored meet featuring Heps rivals Princeton and Columbia, Big East foes Villanova and UConn, ACC power Virginia, as well as Albany, Army, Delaware State and Morgan State.     NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Big Red women's track and field teams competed in New York City this weekend at the New York Road Runners' "College Saturday Night at the Armory" on Saturday evening, a scored meet featuring Heps rivals Princeton and Columbia, Big East foe Villanova, ACC power Virginia, as well as Albany, Army, and Morgan State. The Cornell women came out on top in the team scoring with 162 points to out-distance second place Virginia by 48 points; Princeton was third with 94.5 points, Villanova was fourth with 92.5 points and Columbia tallied 76 points. The 80 men and women were starters or key reserves on an officially recognized varsity team with 3.0 or better cumulative grade point averages.   • 2009-10 Cornell Women's Track and Field Preview

    ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women’s track and field squad had another banner year in 2009. The team won the indoor Heptagonal Track and Field Championships, their seventh first place finish in the last eight years. Outdoors the team was second, having their consecutive league win streak snapped at seven. The group claimed twelve individual event first place finishes and set Ivy League all-time bests in the pole vault, long jump, discus, 60 meters and the 4 X 100 meter relay. The Big Red also registered top finishes at the ECAC and NCAA East Regional championships and were headliners at Tennessee’s Sea-Ray Relays, California-Northridge Invite, California-Irvine Open and the Penn Relays where junior Stephanie Pancoast won the coveted 3000 meter steeple-chase event. Senior Jeomi Maduka was a two-time NCAA All-American in the long jump while two other Big Red athletes competed at the National Meet.

  • Edelman Earns NCAA Berth As Men's Cross Country Takes Seventh At Regionals

    BOSTON, Mass. -- Earning an individual bid to the NCAA Championships, junior Nate Edelman led the Cornell men's cross country team on Saturday at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships. Edelman earned All-Region honors with his 9th place showing and also earned a spot at the NCAA Championships next week in Terre Haute, IN. With the field now set for the NCAAs and Syracuse, Iona and Providence all moving on as teams from the Northeast, Edelman advances to the NCAAs as the third individual in the Northeast Region. Edelman's selection marks the third straight year the Cornell men's team has advanced an individual to the NCAA Championships.

  • Marine General To Be Career Day Motivator

    ITHACA, N.Y. -- A man who built a distinguished career leading tough men, Marine Corps Lt. Gen. John M. (Jay) Paxton Jr. ‘B.S., ‘73, M. Eng ‘74, will join a notable array of mentors at the Cornell Football Association’s fifth annual Career Day at Schoellkopf this spring. Gen. Paxton is Director for Operations, J-3, of the Joint Staff, which assists the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in accomplishing his mission. He was previously Chief of Staff for Multinational Force Iraq in Baghdad and, before that, commanding general of the First Marine Division.
