Hempstead’s Lipsey outkicks Brianna Welch of North Shore By Christopher Hunt Charlene Lipsey isn’t seasoned enough to walk into the 800 meters with an intricate gameplan. She didn’t enter the invitational 800 meters with splits in her head, knowing how fast she wanted to run each lap. The Hempstead junior didn’t map out any surges and certainly didn’t have a finishing time in mind.

And as they settled themselves, Chanelle Price gave people a reason to say to anyone who came later, “Man, you missed it.” The Olympic hopeful and Easton Area (Pa.) senior crushed the meet record in the 1,000 meters and topped the Pennsylvania state record at the Bishop Loughlin Games today at the Armory.

A quiet lion in the history of American long distance running left us this past Wednesday in Texas. He had gone there from his home in New York City for his final battle with cancer. Ted was a pioneer, an explorer of the human depths of physical exertion long before anyone here in New York knew or appreciated this side of distance running. A dignified, reserved man Ted translated his college career as a 50 second quarter miler and later his Olympic Marathon experience in the 1952 Helsinki Games, into a life-long passion for the ultra distances.

Emily Lipari Places 6thNortheast boys finish second By Christopher Hunt Rosyln’s Emily Lipari already had a handful of reasons that she could have faltered and nobody would have blamed her. Overnight rain soaked the course. She had to travel across the country to compete in the most competitive race she’s ever seen. But she’s never been fazed. Not this season. She’s ever given much thought to failure or even acknowledged it. “I wasn’t even nervous,” Lipari said. “I felt really good. I was so loose. I was like, whatever happens, happens. I’m only a sophomore so hopefully this was the first of many chances.”

Fayetteville-Manlius WinsNational TitleBy Christopher Hunt He said the answer was both simple and complex — the reason Manilus has become a historic team, unquestionably among the best ever. They bought it, coach Bill Aris said. They made a choice. They made conscious effort to make excellence a lifestyle. “Normal has nothing to do with excellence,” Aris said. “Excellence is another approach all together. If you choose to approach your life in a fashion geared to achieve excellence then the question becomes, how high is up?” Manilus continues to reach new limits. They dominated Nike Team Nationals today, winning their fourth straight national title with 83 points, placing three in the top 10 at 5-kilometer course in Portland, Ore.

Warwick Valley Boys Win DMR
Still rounding into form, Warwick runs 10:24.05
By Christopher Hunt
Warwick Valley’s Ryan Florkiewicz knew to keep things in perspective. This was good, for now. They still had cross country legs, he said. They are still trying to remind their bodies of what indoor track feels like.
But if they felt that way, his team sure didn’t show it. Mike Fox (3:09.4), Karl Schnabl (51.7), Florkiewicz (2:02.2) and Brad Ackerman (4:20.6) won the championship distance medley relay in 10:24.05 at the Marine Corps Holiday Classic.
