ITHACA, N.Y. – In spite of damp conditions and cool temperatures, the Cornell men's track team had fine performances at the Ithaca College Invitational on Saturday as the squad won eight events.
The Cornell men were led by very strong performances in the throws as the team had four IC4A qualifiers in these events. Freshman
Stephen Mozia continued his outstanding rookie campaign, winning the shot put (57' 2 3/4”) and discus (171' 7, No. 5 all-time at Cornell), both IC4A qualifiers. Classmate
Jesse Braun had a terrific day as well, taking second in the discus (159' 9”, an IC4A qualifier), the shot put (47' 6 1/4”) and the hammer (158' 2”). And junior Bob Fiedler continued to throw well, winning the hammer with an IC4A-qualifying mark of 186' 1”.
The Big Red also swept the horizontal jumps as sophomore
Hercules Stancil won the long jump at 21' 4” to lead freshman
Han Wei Chew, freshman Nick Athanasopoulous and junior
Jourdan White to a 1-2-3-4 finish. Athanasopoulous came back to win the triple jump at 45' 1”. In the pole vault, freshman Steven Pawlak cleared 13' 11 1/4” to place first while sophomore
Casey Leamon was over the same height to get second.
On the track, the Big Red claimed a pair of first-place finishes. Junior Zach Zeller won the 110 hurdles in a time of 14.81 while Athanasopoulous took a break from jumping to place second in 15.89. And the 4x400 of senior
Tom Randall, senior Steve Wexler, freshman
Mike Rabbitt and freshman Zach Flood won with a time of 3:33.61.
Also running well was sophomore
Elliott Rosenberg, who took second in the 800 in 1:57.50, sophomore Gabe Heck, who was second in the 1500 in 4:03.14 and senior
Chandler Kemp, who placed second in the 3K steeple in 9:26.00.
Next up for Cornell is a busy weekend. The team will host the Cornell April Open at the Robert J. Kane Sports Complex on April 6-8, a contingent of middle distance runners will race at the Princeton Invitational on April 6 and a small group of distance runners will race at the Stanford Invitational on Friday.
