In a reversal, the guys took a much longer time getting to the finish line than did the women harriers -- in this ex-NYS college runners wrap-up article that is. After being alerted that I'd missed some women's runners at the junior college and NAIA levels or in pockets out in the western US in the women's article, I spent a huge amount more time on the men's XC sites searching for runners hiding out in obscure places. By February, recounting last year's great XC feats may seem like ancient history or maybe a second wind for the effort of recapturing the past season to figure out what needs to be done for the next campaign.

So again, for all the runners who graduate from their NY high schools and go off to college, we've tried to track you down on scattered university, meet, and NCAA sites across the country. More than two thousand of you who ran the XC trails for NY high schools were competing for colleges in 2011. Many recent grads were either redshirting during their freshman or sophomore years or had to bow out early due to injuries or health issues. Some of the runners' high school exploits stretch back as far as a Feds championship in 2004, while others were fresh off championships at the States meet at Pawling.

The summaries the 2011 season for the guys have added almost 200 more names than were cited for the women, who will get a more fair share next year. In addition to brief synopses of last year's placements at meets ranging from the Codfish Bowl and Fordham Fiasco to the regional qualifiers and national championships, a few of the college seniors have also had a career wrap-up provided if info is available on the college's site. A few (but unfortunately not many) college XC sites display race images highlighting the runners, and a couple dozen have been linked to here.

Although the NY girls often get more glory at the national level, the NY guys also did their share last year in college. Three NY colleges were among the 31 teams at the NCAA D1 Nationals, and though 9th place Iona had a top 7 almost entirely of guys from other nations, 15th place Syracuse and 27th place Columbia had a number of key runners from NY. No NY schools ran at the D2 Nationals, but the D3 race included 4th place SUNY-Geneseo, 8th place St. Lawrence, 19th place NYU, 20th place SUNY Cortland, and 22nd place Rochester, all loaded with NY runners. Led by 2nd-place SUNY Delhi and 3rd-place Mohawk Valley Community College, NY schools were heavily represented at the NJCAA D3 Championship for junior college runners. Though no NY teams qualified for NAIA Nationals, two guys each from Houghton and Roberts Wesleyan headed out to Washington for the meet.

The NY guys at the D1 Nationals included Pat Dupont (Fairport, Syracuse), Christian Thompson (Candor, Colorado), Ryan Sheridan (Walt Whitman, Villanova), Kyle Merber (Half Hollow Hills, Columbia), Joe Whelan (Hamburg, Syracuse), Max Straneva (Chenango Valley, Syracuse), and Eddie Owens (Packer Collegiate, Princeton). A trio at D2 Nationals were Andrew Coehlo (Wantagh, Adelphi), Brendan Devine (Monticello, Southern Indiana), and Peter Gelston (White Plains, Shippensburg State). NY runners were a large part of the starting mass at D3 Nationals, and 9 who finished among the top 55 included Lee Berube (Ticonderoga, SUNY Geneseo), Jamie Vavra (Newark Valley, Rochester), Edward Novara (Lake Shore, SUNY Geneseo), Mark Streb (Brockport, SUNY Geneseo), Ryan Boyd (Bayport-Blue Point, NYU), Dylan Karten (Milbrook, NYU), Alex Benway (Queensway, Clarkson), Max Robinson (Rye, Johns Hopkins), and Tom Hopkins (West Genesee, SUNY Cortland). Among the top 10 at the NJCAA D3 meet were Chris Burnett (Bainbridge, SUNY Delhi), Kevin Zych (Westhill, Onondaga CC), and Thomas Arcuri (Sauquoit Valley, Mohawk Valley CC). Both Berube in the NCAA D3 and Burnett in the NJCAA D3 nailed 2nd place finishes.

Among the things learned while researching this article was what CCOC stands for. It's the Cross Country Only Conference, and obviously with a name like that it just can't be beat. Cheers to Clarkson's Alex Benway for winning the CCOC title. SUNY Geneseo's Lee Berube reeled off at least 5 straight 1sts before finally getting nipped by St. Thomas (MN)'s Lee Sathre at Nationals. SUNY Delhi's Chris Burnett posted almost a mirror image record to Berube's at the JC level. Saint Rose's Macky Lloyd also had a huge year with wins in the Williams Purple Valley Classic and the Paul Short - White race. Pat Dupont, Christian Thompson, and Kyle Merber all shone at the top level in their senior seasons, and about 20 guys scored 1sts in smaller meets around the area. Another great season in the books.

The summaries below provide only a sketch the runners' achievements, but they at least remind us where everyone ended up, at least for 2011. There are a few images linked in from Milesplit and other running sites.

Zach Ahart HS: Starpoint College: Buffalo College Year: Sophomore	Ahart was 2nd in the Buffalo Stampede, 151st in the Paul Short -Gold race, 49th in the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invite, and 83rd in the NCAA D1 Northeast Regional.

Career Summary: Berube has an incredible resume, but it's hard to pull out from the SUNY-Gen site (hint there). Went from 8th at last year's Nationals to 2nd this year, and he placed 1st in the SUNYAC indoor 3000m and 5th in the D3 Nationals outdoor 5000m in 2011.

Mitchell Boucher HS: Pittsford-Sutherland College: Colgate College Year: Senior	Boucher was 23rd in the Colgate Invite, 114th in the Albany Invitational, 60th in the Liberty League Championship, 117th in the IC4A-ECAC Championship, and 214th in the NCAA D1 Northeast Regional.

Ryan Boyd HS: Bayport-Blue Point College: New York University College Year: Senior	Boyd was 70th in the Fordham Fiasco, 30th in the Williams Purple Valley Classic, 14th in the Metropolitan Championship, 30th in the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invite, 15th in the University Athletic Association Championship, 13th in the NCAA D3 Atlantic Regional, and 42nd at the D3 Nationals. Career Summary: Boyd earned All-Atlantic Region honors the least three years for NYU.

David Bransfield HS: Kellenberg College: New York University College Year: Freshman	Bransfield was 22nd in the Williams Purple Valley Classic subvarsity race and 83rd in the Metropolitan Championship.

Paul Brockett HS: Sauquoit Valley College: Mohawk Valley CC College Year: Sophomore	Brockett was 51st in the Cortland Invite, 39th in the Hamilton Invite, 17th in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region III Championship, and 46th in the NJCAA D3 Nationals.

Ed Brown HS: Colonie College: Saint Rose College Year: Freshman	Brown was 13th in the Williams Purple Valley Classic, 98th in the Paul Short - White Race, 6th in the Golden Knight Joust, 54th in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship, and 51st in the NCAA D2 East Regional.

Kevin Brown HS: Gowanda College: Roberts Wesleyan College Year: Freshman	Brown was 49th in the Roberts Wesleyan Invite, 34th in the Hamilton Invite, 176th in the NAIA Great Lakes Invite, 13th in the America Midwest Conference (Mideast section) Championship, and 99th in the National Christian College Athletic Association Championship.

Dan Bruton HS: Cooperstown College: SUNY Oneonta College Year: Shenendehowa	Bruton was 36th in the New Paltz Invite, 48th in the Oneonta Invite,177th in the D3 Northeast Pre-Regional, 127th in the Connecticut College Invite, and 82nd in the SUNYAC Championship.

Nathan Bub HS: Voorheesville College: Saint Rose College Year: Junior	Bub was 24th in the Williams Purple Valley Classic, 163rd in the Paul Short - White Race, 9th in the Golden Knight Joust, 83rd in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship, and 118th in the NCAA D2 East Regional.

Chris Buchanan HS: Cicero-North Syracuse College: Albany College Year: Freshman	Buchanan was 9th in the Monmouth Invite, 36th in the Iona Invite, 112th in the Greater Louisville Invite, 12th in the Albany Invite, 32nd in the America East Conference Championship, and 159th in the NCAA D1 Northeast Regional.

Matthew Buell HS: Monsignor Farrell College: St. Thomas Aquinas College Year: Sophomore	Buell was 94th in the Fordham Fiasco, 48th in the CW Post Invite, 32nd in the NJIT Highlander Invite, 42nd in the East Coast Conference Championship, and 94th in the NCAA D2 East Regional.

Chris Burke HS: Tully College: Albany College Year: Senior	Burke was 3rd in the Monmouth Invite, 8th in the Iona Invite, 9th in the Greater Louisville Invite, 2nd in the Albany Invite, 2nd in the America East Conference Championship, and 24th in the NCAA D1 Northeast Regional. Career Summary: Burke made a huge name for himself while at junior college SUNY Delhi leading the team to two NJCCA D3 national titles in XC while also winning three individual indoor championships in the 800m and 1500m. Led SUNY Albany team after transferring.

Chris Burnett HS: Bainbridge College: SUNY Delhi College Year: Sophomore	Burnett was 1st in the Oneonta Airfield Invite, 1st in the Rochester Wildcat Invite, 1st in the Mountain Valley Conference Championship, 1st in the National Junior College Athletic Association - Region III Championship, and 2nd in the NJCAA D3 Nationals.

Brian Busby HS: New Paltz College: SUNY ESF (Environmental Science and Forestry) College Year: Freshman	Busby was 15th in the Oswego Invite, 8th in the Cortland Invite, 6th in the Hamilton Invite, and 2nd in the US College Athletic Association Championship.

Mike Buscemi HS: Bayport-Blue Point College: St. Joseph's (LI-NY) College Year: Senior	Buscemi was 85th in the Fordham Fiasco, 20th in the Bard Invite, 82nd in the Connecticut College Invite, 121st in the ECAC D3 Championship, 163rd in the NCAA D3 Atlantic Regional, and 12th in the Skyline Conference Championship.
